97 Steering issue after repair

Yesterday I replaced the front axle shaft U-joint driver side as they were making the usual clainking sound during hard turns. This is the second time I have done this job on a Jeep and although the old ones were so corroded they were hard to get out. The new ones went in nice and were a nice tight fit. Greased the new ones and installed them on the vehicle. Now today when driving, the steering is effected. It seemd to have random "hard" spots in the steering. For instance, at any given time, I can turn a certain way with no problem, then when I turn the other way, for about a quarter to half a turn it feels like it gives some resistance then goes away. This very random and I dont think it has a difference which way the steering is turned. Some people seem to think it is the steering damper but it only seems to do it when the Jeep is in motion. When the car is still, I havent seen any resistance. It would point to the U-joint but the installation went smoothe. Help! Please!

Just to let everyone know.... After the installation, about three days, the steering has loosened up considerably and it seems like it is back to normal. I dont know if the U-joint needs time to seat properly or what but all seems ok now.
