Would you recommend a Grand Prix

My son is just graduating from college and is thinking about a used 2005 or 2006 Grand Prix. He wants an affordable 36 month payment. When you read reviews Consumer Reports, Edmonds etc it always seems nothing is good enough for them but each step costs. Would you Grand Prix owners recommend one. I'm out of the loop here..My last Grand Prix was a 1964 with a 421 and a 4:11 rear end. Damn that was a performer. Hey were some of U born then?

Thanks

yeah they have their problems if your getting used like with any car, but it all depends how the previous owner maintained it. the GTP's are good, but i think more likely to have problems because some people tend to drive them more rough, which seems to have been the case with mine. if the upkeep on the car was good though then there shouldnt be any problems.

you're going to have a select few of ANY car that are lemons, I haven't had any problems with mine other than in the '04s GM didn't put enough powersteering fluid in the car and my pump went out at like 26k, but the warranty fixed it...

Dude, The Grand Prix is an awesome car. So many morons buying japanese junk these days cause someone told them it is better. I'll stack the GTP or any other GP up to them. More power and excellent fuel economy. Where else can you get a car with 240HP that will get 30mph on the highway. Not too many cars will keep up with the Grand Prix. They are very reliable as well. Love my car!!

I love my 99 GT as well. I bought it with 73k, it now has 90k, and I haven't done anything but maintenance. Leather, HUD, sunroof, 21 city/32+ hwy, I just wish it was a GTP. The kid in me would like more power, and my next one will be a GTP. Every car has it's little issues, and at least with a Grand Prix, you've got good people here on AF to turn to when something does go wrong.

I have 315,000 miles on mine with a minimum of problems and still driving it daily 100 miles. Maybe the newer ones aren't as good.

I think the newer GP and GTP are great.
Most of the "bugs" are worked out anyway.

But I do like my Grand Ams, even with all thier shortcomings :shakehead

30? 32? mpg I was thrilled just to get my '00 gtp to almost 29.

I had a '99 gtp and loved it. Deer totalled it after 1 year at 84k so I bought a '00 gtp. Still fun to drive, but has had more problems. I've had it for 3 years now but would not buy another one after this. It's still a good car though. The only problem the car ever had that actually made the car undrivable was a dead battery. But I can't complain when the stock Delco battery lasted 7 years. (went out on me last week)

The majority of any problems you'll have with one will probably be sensor related.

I must have bought three new lemons.
GM will not back their products up, that's why they're in trouble.
The same ole crap just a different year car.
All you have to do is read this forum to see all the problems with these cars.
I sure wish I new about AF a long time ago, it would have saved me alot of money.
My fox body stang has been one of the best cars I've ever owned.
Too bad they still don't make them.

Has anyone heard good/bad about the GXP? I like the V8 power and the Northstar gets good ratings for economy/performance.

Love them V8s

Thanks for all of your time and honest answers. I'm pretty sure he really wants a Grand Prix. I will tell him to get one of the warrantees. From what I can tell one of the best ones is from Warrantydirect.com. Getting one from the dealer you purchase the vehicle from is usually more expensive and so many just like the new GM 5 year 100000 mile “Limited” warranty that they just started is just what it says “Limited”.

well i dont know man,you can see every kind of car on these forums pick any they all look like this one does actually i came from eclipse talon laser and we had way more problems with those than they do here.every car breaks its just the matter of how good you take care of it.And every car has there own specific problems like with the eclipses you have the crankwalk issue and the door handles snapped off tons of stuff, point being whatever kind of car you buy will always have problems.sorry for your bad luck with GM.Thanks for reading later guys ~joe

The gm 3800 is one of the best motor's ever made. It's been out for a long time. It's not unusual for it to last 250-300K miles, as long as the oil is changed. Plus they have a pretty stout bottom end if you son would some day like to make it a little faster;)

Why would the lower end be stout when it only has two bolt mains?
They get a lot of cap walk, from the ones I have seen.

because it is capable of running up to 700hp on the stock bottom end.
