Engine light on....

Hello all,

The engine light in my 98 Intrigue GL comes on every second Saturday around noon like clockwork.

I bring it to my mechanic who does a free scan and it always shows abnormal amount of carbon build up. He cleaned the throttle body and gave me some gas line cleaner additive but to no avail.

Does anyone have a thought on what the cause might be?

Regards,

It would be helpful to post the odb-ii fault codes you are getting from that free scan.

I'll try to do that.

btw, I left the battery disconnected overnight and the engine light is gone.

yup, thats the most primitive way of clearing the check engine light, when the battery is disconnected for a certain amount of time, usually about 10-15 minutes will do, it resets the computer, thereby clearing the check engine light.

Its mostly personal preference, but I like to clear it using an actual code reader, a lot of repair shops that come out to your car and read the codes for you wont clear it due to liability reasons, but a place that typically doesnt come out to your car (like Oreillys) will just let you borrow their reader and you can clear it yourself.

I like to use the reader, because it wont reset the computer, meaning youll keep your short and long term fuel trims instead of the PCM having to re-learn them and whatnot. Also you keep your radio presets, and the time.

Get it scanned again and post the DTC error codes. There are alot of people that will help out in this forum.

Well, I had the car OBD II'ed and the code was P0507-B which is something to do with the car revving too high.

I wonder what it will show 2 weeks from now :frown:

Your idle air control valve or wiring circuit or pcm has a problem.
Have you got any vacume leaks or air intake leaks?
You really need a good engine capable scanner to test it out.
A good mechanic with a good scanner could pinpoint it for you.

Hi MT-2500,

I don't think I have vacume or air intake leaks.

My mechanic did a scan and it showed code P0507-B = engine's revving too high. He took out the idle air control valve and gave it a good clean, reset the codes and I was on my way.

I bought this car at the end of July and so far the engine light came on 4 times. Is this normal?

I'm beginning to feel quite annoyed with this car. There's just doesn't seem to be any down time with it. There's always something going on. I particuarly dislike the rattling sound, i.e. "yatzee shaker" at first roll. Just can't get used to it.

Ive just about decided the "yahtzee shaker" is a normal sound. If were talking about the same sound of course.

Im talking about the sound when you first start rolling that sounds like the ABS kicking in. Ive talked to other Intrigue owners, and Bonneville owners and several other late model ABS equipped cars, they all do the same thing. Yes its annoying, but I think its normal

We are talking about the same sound. Is there any way at all to rectify this?

For a code 507 here is the repair flow chart or what you need to do.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

It's my personal belief that its nothing more than an ABS self-test, that while annoying, is perfectly normal, and cant really be altered, and I dont really want it to be, I for one like to know my ABS is working, its one of my favorite safety features.

Haha I dont really know that we should be discussing two different topics in the same thread, but thats what I think the sound is. I dont really have any proof, other than that it sounds extremely similar to the sound you hear when the ABS engages, and Ive talked to other people with ABS equipped cars that do similar things.

Here we go again... the engine light is back on except this time it took only one week. Is this normal? This is the 5th time since August 1st that the light has come on.:disappoin

This is getting very, very frustrating :banghead:
