overhead console retrofit possible?

I have a 1988 Plymouth Voyager that I inherited, 85,000 miles, in exc. cond., even shiny paint (3.0 3speed). I'm trying to restore & improve it as it works perfectly for my windsurfing. I'd really like to add the overhead console option to this vehicle. As I'm replacing the headliner, seems like the time to try this, if possible. I've located one at a Pic'n Pull that's the right color and looks to be in perfect shape (haven't checked it electrically tho'). But, I have no idea of what's involved with this & how feasible it is. I know there is an outside sensor for the temp. function, maybe located at the front bottom near the radiator but haven't found it yet. But really, I have no idea how the console is wired, or even how to remove it (I found one screw holding it up but perhaps the others are hidden). If anyone can help on this, I'd appreciate it. The compass & temp. functions would be especially useful for my windsurfing. Thanks in advance for any help....gt

First get a manual for your year van. Not all of this may be covered but enough to get you rolling. A factory manual will have it all but they are expensive and probably harder to find at this point. The issue is whether the wiring harness is in your van. I would get all the harness from the donor as well as headliner and sensors. Because of time the parts may be brittle, so go slow on removal. You may have to use more than one donor van. I am mostly familiar with 3ed gen vans, so can't help more than generally with a 1st gen project. You definitely need a wiring diagram to figure out where stuff is connected. Hopefully someone who knows 1st gens will chime in. This is doable especially if your willing to replace the headliner.
On 3ed gens after removing the screw you unclip some tabs that are in the eye glasses compartment and the outer part comes down. You then pull the wiring harness connects. I am pretty sure yours is different. Haynes/Chilton should cover disassembly of this part.
As always, good luck with your project!

Thanks for that reply, that helps a little. I have the Chilton's manual for 84-88, it doesn't cover the overhead console for some reason. Any other info appreciated...gt

Hmmmm...my Chiltons has that info. Try the library. They usually have Motors or someone else, which sometimes has the exploded drawings and steps for removal. You might ask the service manager/mechanic at a dealer about how to. Sometimes they will help. I doubt the guys working at Pick-a-part know how it comes out, but doesn't hurt to ask. Hopefully someone here will chime in.

Thanks for that last reply, good idea, maybe the library will have a newer (Chilton's) edition that includes 89-90 & will have detail on this.
Is there anybody out there that had this overhead console (87-90) that can say if it was worth having? (i.e. the temp. & compass are reasonably accurate, etc.?) Thanks again...gt

Don't forget they are probably the same across the platforms so if you can find a T&C, Plymouth, or Dodge manual it might have the instructions.
I wish I could tell you if these consoles are any good but...I don't/didn't have one in mine, so no experience. I've read threads where some say they are spot on and others who say they are off.
Probably like everything else DC...a crap shoot.
