burned up distributor?

today, while i was accelerating away from a stop sign my car seemed to stall as if i had killed like the first time i drove a stick. i seemed to turn over and want to start but there was no spark. upon inspection i took off the distributor cap and discovered that the whole thing was fried and burned up on the inside:confused: . this i dont understand. what could have caused this to happen?
