BMW 318i

10-13-2006, 10:06 PM
Ok I just got a new used car, a 1995 BMW 318i, and i wana street race it. But will I be able to beat many other cars? Its only an automatic 4 cylinder so im wondering if it has any potential... And any tips for street racing would be helpful! Thanks.

Does it have any potential now?

Not really. Get some serious mods on it, sure, but you can say that about any car really. Elsewise, welcome to the forum, always good to have another Bimmer guy around...

^^ Like Cassie said any car can be made fast. But it would be cheaper and much easier to buy something else to get some better performance. Otherwise if you are 16 it is definately not a bad car to start in. Welcome to the forums and as said before people will sometimes give you a hard time or joke around. You just have to learn each person on here.

I raced new M6 in mazda 323...I popped the clutch and my chassis twisted comming off the line from the amount of torque my 1.6 engine produced. I heard my rear end nearly falling apart once my Kenne Bell kicked in. By the time I double clutched to second this fool in M6 was 5 car lenghts behind. In second I took it up to the VTEK range and hit the nitrous, I saw flames comming out from my MOTEK system exhaust as they engulfed the black M6. I let of at the end of 3rd gear at about 179mph since I was in the school zone. So at the next light this fool asks me what kind of mods I have ? I spit and his car and say "Winning is winning biatch, now go buy a mazda 323".

HAHAHAHA.
Your 318 can be made fast but it will take a lot of $$$$$. I am not sure about BMW engine swaps, but you probably could swap a motor from 325/M3 of that generation. Also don't try to give your car(s) more credit than they deserver or you will end with stories like above one.

You do people hate bmw owners or resent them sometimes? and my friend witht the firehawk said it could beat corvettes in a 1/4 mile race is this true? I kinda have a hard time beleiving it... and i know my car isnt super fast compared to others... Its a four cylinder, what can i say... but im happy with it! it looks amazing sitting in my garrage with out plates, and i dont have a lisecnce yet... Ug it pisses me OFF!

That engine doesnt have a lot of potential even with FI. Your best bet would be to do an engin swaw with an s50. Thats a M3 engine from a 95 BMW.or you could try swaping a LS1 into and make great power, I know its been done before and I think theres a write up for it.

Honestly, I tend to tell people to avoid 4-cylinder BMWs unless they are E30 M3s. I've seen some really cool S50 (the I6 from the OBDI E36 M3) swaps into 318i/tis, but people usually stay away from the 4-cylinder. Unless you have some emotional connection to this 318i, I'd sell it in favor of any 6-cylinder BMW you can get your hands on. The E36 325is is a good car, but even an old E30 325is should be faster then the E36 318i. There isn't a single pre-made turbo/supercharger kit that I know of for the 318i. I would personally sell it in favor of an E30 325is, then get a chip, intake, and exhaust from Dinan which supposedly will put you at around 200hp, just about where the E30 M3 is.

So no, the 318i has just about no potential and no aftermarket.

Your car is a good handler though, so you could focus on that. Other wise swap in a S50 (E36 M3) and your car will hall ass.

I wish I had a Bimmer when I was 16...

Been there done that, then at 17 I decided a Porsche was more my style:smokin:

Funny thing is though Im really not rich at all. And I bought both of them myself... well my parents did help me with the Porsche but I paid them back in three months.

Not quite sure, but Google could be a great help. Also, ask some of our local Bimmer gurus. I'm sure they'd have an idea. There is a bimmer forum here. Post that same question there. You can also try some of the bimmers forums that are found online.

it would cost more than selling the 318 and buying an M3 to begin with.
