Both are good cars. I think the bmw is the real deal. Will you be doing the service work or will you hire it out? I like my bmw, it really drives soooo nice. Also no timing belt, mine has a chain.
Which one is better taken care of?

Thank you for your reply.

I spoke with a friend of mine - mechanic, he says lexus does not require that much service. BMW he says needs more maintenance than Lexus.

Reliability will very alot from car to car with BMW. The six cylinder 3-series is one of the most reliable cars on the road while a newer 5-series with IDrive is not all that great. BMW drivetrains are usually very reliable while BMW electronics are not as good as what you might find in a Lexus or an Acura. I would say that a BMW engine and transmission can easily outlast a Lexus/Toyota drivetrain if well maintained. There are a bunch of 200-300,000 mile E30 3-Series on the road and not so many Lexus that high. According to JD Powers, Lexus makes the most reliable cars right now and BMW is about 25% of the way down the list (again, mostly because of non-drivetrain issues). That said, there is not a single Lexus that is as fun to drive as its BMW counterpart.

I have four BMWs in the family and they do last a long time with little unsxheculed maintenance.

Lexus hasn't been around long enough to establish a comparable record. But my oldest son, who worked his way through college as a foreign car mechanic, said Toyotas were the most reliable brand. By inference, Lexus should be very good also.

While I've never owned a Japanese car, they do electronics much better than the Europeans.

Let's call it a draw for now.
