crush vs. mandrel piping

welps, on my mission to tubro, im callin all these muffler shops near where i live. none of the big chains tend to to custom 3'' mandrel bent piping.

so in otherwards, tell me whats the big difference between mandrel bent and crush bent.

Well, crush bent piping is just that, the use a press to bend it into the desired shape, which leaves impressions in the piping... it's not a huge deal but not the greatest for absolute performance.

Mandrel bent is done in a machine that gently bends the piping leaving very little impressions inside the piping, making it ideal for performance.

The impressions, if you haven't guessed... cause excessive amounts of back pressure.

I will know more in about 3 weeks.

I have true duals, but they are crushed bends.
So I am putting cutouts at each header....and I will re-dyno with them open.
Somewhere in between would be mandrel bands.

lol. that works. i was thinking of going that route, cutout, but my cousin had one and it raddled a little when it was closed. So like a dumbass he put rubber on the open/closeing flap and broke it. i know that they arent expensive, and worth it, but the electronic ones are pricy, and the manual one is what my cousin had, with the cable open/close feature.

I am going manual.
I can't see spending a decent amount of $$ for something that will eventually stop working thanks to carbon build-up.
Those butterfly electric ones are a pain.

I will get a video clip up.

when you do it just make sure you have as many 180 degree turns in the exhaust as possible, those are great for flow. whats even better is when you make sharp cuts rather than bends. :icon16:

but seriously, if you dont have to get emmissions checked, just put a straight pipe on instead of a cat, you dont need that damn thing. all its good for is getting plugged up.

see, i live in a place where they do take emissions, otherwise the whole test pipe would have been in for the longest, and i wouldnt be having this thread made. its called downpipe exhaust, the pipe coming from the downpipe would be a mandrel 45 degree straight back, and ending up ending towards the middle of the car, like the middle of the underside. but i do have emissions. that really sux. i think imma just go 2.5 regualar catback, and when the time comes, put a cutout at the end of the downpipe, one going through the 2.5 exhaust, the other just allowing it to freely flow out right under the engine.

thanks for your input guys.

Go with mandrel, no question. A crush bent 3" system would be like having a 2.5" mandrel bent system. Those crushes add quite a bit of back pressure. There is quite a difference, trust me; I saw a huge difference on the GTC when I went from the stock crush bent system to the full mandrel bent system.

there is no place by me unless i would like to drive 100+ miles to chicago....apparently i must order the bends off the internet. so this is most likley not going to happen any time soon unless i can mail you cash and u use credit card. my whole project is on hold because i cant order parts. what a bummer..

I had to order mine too. Not many places have mandrel benders.

slideways...

you realize you can order mandrel bends from places like summit or i believe JCwhitney...just find someone who can weld them on. you can use 3" intercooler piping bends if its stainless steel.

well...i might as well update this thread, as it's my own. resurrection thread ftw! no really, a lot of threads have been on the resurrection these days.

i just got my HKS catback i bought installed. its about 2.36'' all the way through.

quick sound clip. its not too loud. i like it. and dont worry. i just turned the car off for the vid. so the engine is fine.

Chiquae07's new HKS exhaust (http://video.tinypic.com/player.php?v=4i6rfhl)

i guess i need an update thread. i'll do it sooner or later.

About? That's a pretty random guess... I'd say it really is 2.36". You can't fool me!!! :shakehead

Sounds decent. Now it just needs the nuts to back it up... get to it!:iceslolan

I really need to get a chart with and without the cutouts open since we cut down the over the axle pipe to 2.5"

stig, im working on it

it is acutally 2.36. i did some research, and 2.5 i'd lose power w/o cams, and 2.0 would be the equililant of running the stock exhaust w/o the muffler. so, when the rest of the exhaust comes(where my actual leak is), it'll be kinda a mixture of the 2'' and the 2.5'' header and mid pipe which is also 2.5'', with the hks. sounds mean with a header. i have a sound clip of that as well, from another person on a different board that im a part of as well.

http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c368/invalidation/?action=view&current=acbaa68c.flv

and so thats all the performance mods that i plan on doing for this car, for the mean time. i was going to surprise just about everyone, but the whole turbo thing went under. i ended up parting out my 'custom setup' and got back more than what i payed for everything new. damn crappy automatic that cant hold more than 210whp, or around there. and i was hoping for around 250whp. damnit.

i have no idea what else i'm going to do to it in the future, as the b15 sentra is starting to have more aftermarket support and such. lets just say a vq35de sentra is a little bit more common nowadays, and it costs about the same as a turbo kit. mid 13s, all motor, in a 2800lbs car. i think thats a great idea.

or there is 2 more options:
sr20ve build up. i mean crazy like stroker kit, resleeving, sr20ve 20v cams, 12:5 compression, etc...
or
cam and turbo the car, with a tranny swap.

basically, anything i want to do eventually would have a tranny swap. and the only trans i would swap in is a 03 or newer 6spd from the spec-v's. too bad it costs about 800 alone for the bell housing that'll bolt right up to the sr20de/sr20ve.

and none of this would be happening anytime soon. so i got time to research, reasearch, and when i think i know what i want to do, research somemore.

but this is what i have planned so far within the next 2 months or so. all these parts are actually with me, or on the way.

CAI(installed)
Header(back order)
Exhaust(installed)
Midpipe(back order)
