Good way to remove tint

When I bought my used 04 Silverado the back window was already tinted by the previous owner but done very carelessly. I want to remove the tint because it is bubbled and folded in spots, and I want the back to match the front tint I recently put on. My only concern is the little metal bars that go along the window for the defogger. Will they peel off with the tint if I do not do it a certain way? Also, would GooGone work to remove the glue or would that be a bad idea? Thanks

I was going to use googone recently but it states not to use on plastics . I don't know if window film is considered plastic . I am having trouble with my film on one of my cars and will be doing this soon. Razor blade works good for large areas without the defrost but can't be done around the wires . I hope someone has a good method to suggest . Rob

I recently removed the tint from my 83 monte carlo only because it had turned purple. It also has the rear window defoger. This is how the place that retinted the windows told me to do it. I also helped another buddy do this and he thought it was pretty easy. #1 try to start in a corner and peal off what you can just by pulling on the tint. You may need to peal up a corner if it is still intact to the window. #2 Once you get the tint off, you will probably still have a glue type film on the window. To remove this I used a combination of a few things. One I used windex with amonia to help loosen the glue. After the glue started to loosen take paper towel to mop some of the glue up. You may also take EXTRA FINE steel wool to the window. If you do this with the windex on the window your steel wool will gum up faster. If you do this without windex, it just takes a little more effort. (The steel wool will not harm your window or defroster as long as your defroster strips are not damaged. They should not be as new as the truck is.) Just keep repeating this process until the glue is gone to your statisfaction. If you have a really hard spot you can also take a razor blade to it, but be carefull not to slip. I have done this on two cars and had no problems with the defroster. Good luck.

here is what I used on my rear window in my `91 sunbird after i pulled tint off. rubbing alcohol . no problem glue came off with ease. cloth was wet wet wet. it did not damage anything

Buy a cheap garmet steamer at Walmart, I think they are around 30 bucks. Start heating at corner and peal the corner up. Slowly pull the tint off while you continue to steam the heck out of it. Just make sure you go slow. Takes off tint and glue at the same time. Works very good and no worries about damage to rear defoggers. Sell the steamer in a rummage sale or Craig's list when you are done.

To get the glue residue off,use window cleaner with amonia in it.
