It has a fairly new clutch. Is it a good idea to run synthetic oil in the gear box? Also I get about 27 mpg with it any quick ideas for better mileage? Thank you for your time

Perhaps it's trying to tell you it doesn't want to go into first at those speeds. My 3000gt puts up a hell of alot of resistance in the same situations, because it doesn't want to be downshifted into first at any speed. If it's grinding, that is your synchro, and chances are it will only get worse if you continue to try and push it into 1st when it doesn't want to go. I personally think it is always a good idea to run synthetic in the drivetrain. If the fluid is gonna be in there for a couple tens of thousands of miles, why would you want oil that is more prone to breakdown? Check your owner's manual and the galant section for what fluids are in spec and favored by owners. I would recommend Redline as many Mitsu owners find it reduces synchro grinding.
Better gas mileage: New fluids, new filters, check your tire pressure, and pay attention to your driving habits.
