89 K1500 CV Replacment

First off, how hard is it to replace the drivers side CV shaft. Its poping and cracking and i can grab hold of it and move it all around. So im assuming this is whats wrong. Can someone please give me step by step instuctions on how to do this.

It's not that bad. I've not changed mine but I pulled them out when I rebuilt the front end on my '88. I followed the Haynes manual to some extent but I had the upper and lowed ball joints out so the wheel assembly flopped around and it was easy to get the CV shaft out of the hub just by pulling it by hand. The Haynes says to remove the hub cap and break the hub nut loose. Raise the truck and remove the nut and washer, the skid plate and the stabilizer bar then separate the inner tie rods from the relay rod. Remove the CV flange bolts (I say break these loose while the truck is still on the ground) then use a puller to push the outer axle end out of the hub assembly. Nothing special about installation but I'd repack the bearing if you haven't while you're in there. Overall it's a whole lot easier than a front wheel drive car.

Good, the only problem is i dont have access to a puller. would loosening the nut till the end of the shaft and just hammering it out work? or is this a bad idea? Id leave the nut on so it doesnt smash the end of the shaft flat so it doesnt come out.

Don't see that it would hurt anything if you've already dropped the flange off of the differential. Just put a piece of wood over the nut anyway to moderate the blows. In my case, both shafts just slid out without any force, but I may have just been lucky.

There was no need to beat on it... It just slid out. :) The only thing I had some issues with was getting the new CV back in place. The old one was easly to get out because it was so badly destroyed it just fell apart. The new one took a little thought to get back in there.
