theres two places. one is on the cab. you open the driver door and there should be a plate there on the back part of the cab (not on the door) this plate has the GVWR and i beleive vin as well. It is riveted in place right under the door striker bolt. The other area it may be is on the dashpad if it is the factory dashpad. it will be in the front left corner of the pad (if you are looking from inside the cab) though i think you need to be outside looking through the glass to get the right angle to read it, as it is in a hole in the pad. If its not there, then obviously the dashpad has been replaced. if there is a cheapo aftermarket thing that sits on top of the original, as in it doesnt actually replace the old one, then i would take it off and see if the vin is on the original one.

likely your number should have a couple C's in it and it tells the year, type, place manufactured, and original engine equipped with. my 73 c-10 originally came with a 454, lol that would have been sweet, but now im stuck with putting a 383 in there, though its no pile of bricks itself

actually the plate thats under the striker on the cab is the chassie id number and the number thats suppose to be on the dash is not there cause all i am trying to do is see what color the truck came with origanaly, but i do know that the fender badge would say what color its suppose to be but i couldnt find that either!:banghead:

Try looking in your glove compartment. If it has survived the years there might be a sticker in there that shows the interior and exterior colors. I don't know what it was about the fender tags but every body wanted to take them off and take them to the paint shop to have them "decoded" then they never made it back on the car or truck. A lot of old muscle cars could have been worth a lot more or some people could have been saved from being ripped off if the fender tags had been left intact.
I also remembered check your fire wall for the tag and under the cowl.

i looked there and i found a tag there and looked closely and it said it came with a special 2 tone paint job but i couldnt find the colors or anything plus i dont even think the glove box is the origanal cause it looks like it was red at first and now its a lighter blue than the blue thats already on the interior!:shakehead

i didnt find nothing on the firewall and under the cowl at all and the sticker in the glove box was to a suburban cause i took a closer look and it said it came with an optianal 3rd seat but our c10 is a truck not a suburban!

I assume that this must be a project truck. Did you get it from a buddys' field or something??? Just wondering how you came upon the truck. Does it have a title, or salvage title???? Might have to do some calling around of previous owners.lol

title should have the vin number on it, from there you could do your search for info on the truck, I would think one of the numer or letter sequences would tell you what color the truck would have been, then you could cross with your local body shop/paint shop to get the matching color. hope that works for ya.

Your VIN # will not tell you that info. It only tells you what type truck, engine, where it was assembled etc not the color. This is found like I said on the sticker in the glove compartment, fender tag, fire wall tag or cowl tag.

Well I hate to tell you but you are in the same shape that a whole lot of other restorers and people are in that buy trucks and cars every day that have been hacked and chopped on over the years not knowing what goes to what or if it is original or not. My advise is look at some old paint code books of the year or some old pictures or brochures and pick out a color you like and go for it.

i like the black that came on them back in 74 but i want to make it original as possible!:sunglasse

if you go to a paint store the black will be a universal black, unless of course you get something added in or the factory metallic crap or whatever

by the way, im in the middle of restoring a 73, which looks exactly like yours except the grille is a little different, and i did the cab and doors this summer and painted them a color called "flash red" it is a chrysler color i think if i remember right and it looks pretty slick especially in the sun. it will look almost a tint of orange in direct sun and red in the shade
