i just put a 3400 intake on my 3100 beretta, the problem i have now is the egr isin't hooked up neither is the MAP sensor, right now the car starts but idle's very badly, car will not stay running with out throttle being open. It seems to be getting no air at all. I have fuel and spark, the MAP and the EGR are the only two things left unconnected. Is this enuff to cause the car to run like trash? It also is kicking out black smoke from the exhaust. Also, the brake booster, and trany modulator seem to be getting no vaccum at all. I can't get the car to get in gear nor can i press the brake pedal easily. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Having the MAP unhooked could possibly make a difference, but it sounds like you have a major vacuum leak

yep i just ripped the upper intake back off and rerouted the map sensor connector... so now my map sensor is hooked up... i don't know what the problem could be, perhaps its because my egr is disconnected??? I'm hoping theres a way to rig it up for the time being... any thoughts??

The EGR valve is bolted to the intake(with gasket), correct? It doesn't really sound like a head gasket problem..

the intakes and head ports are different between the 3100 Vin-M and 3400 Vin-E engines (the 99-up Vin-J 3100 is the same as the 3400). The center port is shaped differently, and the locating pin is on the opposite side. Look up the intake gasket part numbers, they are different. Your problem was most likely a major leak at that spot.
