Coolant Question

Hi everyone,
Does any one know if there is a difference in the appearance of silicate-based and non-silicate based coolants? I think my manual says I should use non-silicate based coolant. I had the coolant flushed and I am not sure what kind the mechanic might have added. I am asking because I once had another mechanic who put motor oil instead of MTF to save money and my transmission wouldn't shift in cold weather. (I tried just calling them to ask if they added any siliate-based coolant and they would only say they follow manufacturer guidelines).

Also, is it ok to mix different brands of coolants? I noticed the mechanic did not add coolant back to the MIN level. So I was planning to add it myself.

Actually the manual says only to use Genuine Honda Coolant. But IMO, you can use other coolant brands, I personally use Prestone 50/50 coolant mix. I don't know if thats a silicate or non-silicate based coolant, but whatever coolant you use, make sure it says "safe for aluminum engines" on the jug.
