1990 LeSabre starter issues

My 90 LeSabres starter is cooked, or at least I think it is.

Batteries good, engine won't turn over. Just a mild movement of the belt and the smell of burning electrics.

90 Lesabre, 3.8L V6

My question is to anyone who's replaced the starter.

- Where is it located?
- How difficult is it to remove?
- Do I need to remove exhaust pipes/ remove the engine to get to it?

Thanks in advance

It is located on the lower section of the motor, if you crawl under the car and remove the splash guard it should be visible. The AC compressor would be to your right, and to your left would be the starter. I believe there are two long bolts that hold it on, after you remove the bolts for misc wires. I've not been under mine recently, so Its a bit vague in me head.

No removal of the engine, and it isn't a hard job to do as long as you can get the car up on stands/ramps. It is at a wierd angle though so you will probably want to remove at least the radiator fan(s) to give yourself a bit more room...

Thanks, I managed to pull it off.

First bolt was easy to find but was covered by just enough plastic so that I couldn't use my ratchet. Second bolt was hidden under the frame but I managed to pull it off.

Its completely toast. Shame is a holiday today otherwise I would have already fixed it.

Yeah, they die once in a while. When you get a new one, you might as well get a new starter solenoid while you've got everything apart.

The solenoid was cooked too, so I just replaced the whole module.

Car runs great, thanks for the help.
