92 GrandAm Timing Chain

Hey all.. I just picked up a 92 Grand Am 2.3L DOHC . It was rebuilt before he got it, He put maybe 15-20,000 miles on it, And the timing chain broke. He took it in and they said something about the water pump freezing up and thats what caused the chain to snap *shrug*..
Now this is all through the grape vine kinda, So I'm not " positive " on all of it..
I haven't torn it apart to look at it at all yet..
But my questions are, I've been pricing timing chains / kits .. Some of the part stores cant tell me if the vin# for the engine matters or not, But others actually ask me for it when checking on the price.. Do I need to make sure I get one with the correct vin# for the chain.. Or just go with what the part stores are telling me..
Also.. I know I should check first, But just from other people's knowledge I wanted to know if I should go ahead and replace everything as far as the kit goes, Or will I likely just need to replace the chain? .. Again, I know that looking at it after i tear it down will tell me more about that, Just looking for experienced opinions from people that have done it before..
Other then that as far as changing the timing chain and what not, Its the first one I'll be attempting on a pontiac or even anything in the 90's .. Anything I should be careful of ? .. And can this job be a hassle ? .. Looking at it, Doesn't look like there's much room to work with heheh..
Anyway, I've rambled quite a bit now, Any replies at all are greatly appreciated, Thanks guys =)

You will/should replace the timing chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets, water pump, timing cover gasket and the serpentine belt. The reason for some of the extra parts is simple. Since you have it apart, and its a major pain to take it apart (trust me, I did one 2 summers ago) you might as well replace some of the extra parts. But before doing any of this, take the head off and check for internal damage. The 2.3's are an interference fit, meaning that if the motor turns without the timing chain things are going to collide, namely valves and pistons. Once the head is off, you will be able to see if anything hit by looking at the top of the pistons. You will see the marks where the valves hit. Flip the head over and make sure the valves are all good and closed. Good luck, its not an easy job to do. And as for parts, make sure they match the year and vin#, there were 2 different quad motors in 1992, one was a sohc motor and the other was a dohc motor. The timing chain and related parts are not interchangable.

Ah man.. I've dealt with the interference thing with 2 seperate honda preludes that I had.. I was told that this one wasn't the same case.. Hopefully nothing is wrong under the head..
As for the timing chain.. I was talking to some customer service guy from schucks and he was telling me that there was no " vin 3 " for the Quad 4 Engine.. But this car definanately has a Quad 4 and the vin is for sure 3.. So I'm wondering if there was an engine swap at some point ? .. So out of the confusion i'm not sure which timing chain to get.. I guess I just go with the motor which is the dohc.. Which would be vin A or D ? .. I dunno..

It's definately vin 3. vin a is for the dohc ho, and vin d is for the dohc. Go to advance auto's website, you can order the parts directly from there or you can get part numbers and go into shucks with the part numbers and have them reference them.

So you're saying that if the car's vin# is 3.. and the engine is a 16v Quad 4 ( dohc ) 2.3L .. Its for sure a vin 3 timing chain that I need ? Sorry, I just want to be positive..
