93 Jetta stuttering while driving and sometimes gas smell

Ok all.. I posted ealier about my 93 jetta that had trouble starting some days. Yesterday it was doing the same thing but after a wierd startup (it sounded like it started and then putt putt putt quit) the inside of the car smelled of gas/exhaust fumes.. really bad. My wife was starting it and i was sitting on the front steps. I did notice a lil puff of exhaust/smoke(couldn't really tell) come from under the front left(if you are standing infront of the car).. and I mean really little.. i didn't think anything of it at the time.

So she drives in about 200 yards and says its acting funny. We let it sit over night, this morning it starts right up with no problems, sounds fine just idling, she drives it to school and says while cruising and not changing speeds it keep stuttering not bad but noticable. If she presses the gas pedal it speeds up 0 problems, goes back to cruising and it starts to stutter again. Sits at a stop light and it stutters a tiny bit.

Any ideas on what this could be?

Okay i had a chance to get in the car and rev it up and you can press the gas with no problem, all sounds normal rev'n up. Once you let off when it gets down to around 1k rpm it makes a sputter sound real quick and then goes back to normal idle. I have no clue whats going on. Someone help me out.

Had same issue. Check the breather hose. Replace if split and/ or cracked.
Approx $ 60.00 in parts and a very easy10 mininute DIY repair

Where would that be located? We are still having a ton of problems with the car.. mainly the gas, sputtering and such. Ah well..

Located on the front of the engine running up to top.

Go to any VW parts website and look up the breather hose for your model.
There are two parts. An elbow and hose. I know they have picture at

Hope it fixes your problem

Ah ok great.. i'll take a look at it in a little bit (raining cats and dogs out right now). We always thought it was the fuel pump. The one thing I did think was always wierd was when it's having a rough time starting there is usually some puffs of smoke from the passenger side under the hood closest to the windshield. Whats weird now is that when your driving if you come to a stop the engine just dies.. unless you keep your foot on the gas.

This is unless you've been driving for a good 30min or so then it will idle fine. Oy this car is just a pain in my rear.

If the fuel pump is out, it feels like someone cut the accelerator cable. You stomp on the gas and it either goes slow or it dies. Alternatively, it car slows down and you have to push the pedal to the floor just to keep it running. It's generally won't idle well. Check out your exhaust system. It sounds like you may have something stopping it up combined with a bad leak close to the engine. The advise on the intake hose is good. The MAF sensor can't get a proper signal if the hose is bad. This will cause the car to not get gas.

Ah ok.. it doesn't feel like the cables been cut so it's possibly not the fuel pump then it sounds like.. I'll see if I can find that hose today and do a little looking.. is there any real way to check for a crack or something? Perhaps a local shop could check for free?

Just examine it carefully. Here is a link to the part.
