ABS question

I have a 1997 towncar with 62,000 miles on it. My question is whenever I first reach 13mph the ABS pump kicks on and does a self test. The other day I had my foot on the brake when it reached 13 mph(i was going down hill) so the pump could not do a self test and then the ABS light came on. It did do this about a year ago and it was not a problem but I was wondering if anyone has heard of this and what might be the cause? Thanks

my 95 used to do the same thing but then it eventually stopped. now when i'm riding the brake when i first start out and it passes 13mph, as soon as i release the brake the self test kicks it and everything is fine. but yes, every once in awhile my town car used to do exactly what your saying. but then one day it stopped and it hasn't done it in about 6 months. i have no idea why it was doing it. i know sometimes if the car somewhat slid like on a rainy day before the brake test kicked it it used to come on because the car was almost going 13mph when it slid. i don't know what the problem may be...

Yes, normally I make sure that when I reach 13mph I dont put my foot on the brake but the other day I had to because someone was stopped in front of me. Whenever I do that the ABS light comes on because it skips the self test I think. Thanks

hmmm thats strange....when you hit the brake the other day did the pedal feel weird like the ABS was engaging, or did it just feel like normal breaking? and did you also hear the noise for when the ABS does engage or was there just silence? for a start, try unpluging your ABS unit with the car off and then plug it back in. then reset the computer but unhooking the negative battery cable for about a minute. if that doesn't work, then check the connections of the ABS going to each wheel. There might be a wire banging around and sending a false signal to the computer. check that out and see what happens.
