My '97 (2WD) was doing that, or at least it sounds like a similar symptom. It turned out to be a common problem on both the 2WD and 4WD models. It was the slipyoke binding up as suspension went up and down. The slipyoke slides in and out of the transmission tailpiece, and binding was a common problem. We tried everything to solve the problem, and eventually after about 33,000 miles Chevrolet replaced the truck with a '99 of my choosing. The 4WD models seemed to be repairable by using a special lube or additive in the transfer case. The dealer said they had good luck with those, but the 2WD models were giving them fits. They had a special grease for the slipyoke, a newer slipyoke, even putting a rubber ball up in the slipyoke to help it slide out, but nothing worked. When removed and regreased it would work smoothly for 800-2500 miles, then start binding up again. Apparently the problem had been around for a long time...even in some of the late '80's trucks.
