Defrost turns AC on???

I have a 98 z24 cav with a 2.4l spd and when i turn the vents to the windshield defrost, the AC comes on. Is it supposed to do that, Or should i have a look at something???

yes, it turns on the a/c to dry out the air, to remove the moisture (fog) from the windshield
