Message Control Center Illumination

Per the owner's manual, "the message center illumination is lit at all times when the ignition is ON. All information displayed will be brightly lit if the exterior light switch is OFF."
On my 2003 S-type, the illumination could hardly be considered "bright" during the daylight hours. It IS lit, but seems rather dim in bright sunlight. Is this normal? At night - or even in cloudy daytime hours, I can see it ok - but when viewed in bright sunlight, it is really difficult to read.
Does anyone else have this problem - or am I just going blind?????
UPDATE: I found that it IS working as designed - even though it apparently is not as bright as I would like. When I use the thermostat on the dash lights, turn them down a bit, then turn off the outside lights, the message center brightens. Obviously, this is working as the manufacturer meant it to. Guess I am too particular about the brightness. Thanks to everyone who read the post.
