Hey guys, my cousin has a 87' (I believe) camaro and its sitting in his yard doing nothing because the oil pump went on it and a mechanic told him the engine is done. Now, i'm thinking about buying it off him cheap and changing the motor out for a 350. I'm not too experienced with the whole change out engine job so how hard would it be to take this 305 out and put in a 350? What would I need to do for the job? What would I need off the donor car if I were to install a 350? My friend is buying a 91' camaro rs, so I thought i'd look into one also, but hopefully faster :evillol: Anyways, any info is appreciated, you guys probably hear questions like this quite a bit so sorry, but i've been wondering about it, so thanks again for any help.

PS a 305 and 350 have identical external dimensions, bolt-ons and they just plain look identical on the outside. Follow the page posted above for engine R&R and rest easy knowing that you don't have to buy anything special, aside from a knock sensor and maybe a MEMCAL to get the 350 in there.

If it's carbureted, you will have to readjust the idle air bleeds and then the M/C solenoid and the secondary air valve. If it's injected, and you're running the same intake setup that was on the 305 (provided the 350 has centerbolt valve covers like your 305), you will need to swap in bigger injectors and get a PROM/MEMCAL for a 350. You will need to buy a new knock (detonation) sensor for the 350, but your 305 ESC module should be fine with the 350.

Alright, how about the tranny, the car already has a rebuilt one so it should just bolt onto the 350 right? So basically I would need the knock sensor, MEMCAL, and possibly bigger injectors. I would think it would most likely be a TBI setup on the 305 now if not a carb, right? Also would the current ECM in the car be good enough or would I need that off the donor car too? Thanks for the helps guys.

It could be TBI or TPI. I believe you're right though, and the L03 TBI made its debut in the '87 F-body. Your ECM should be fine as long as you keep within what's on it (i.e. TBI to TBI, TPI to TPI or carb to carb). Just the PROM (carb) or MEMCAL (EFI) is all that would need replaced or reprogrammed. Transmission will bolt up no problem.

Thanks silicon. I've never changed out an engine, but in your opinion is it really as hard as it seems or is it just a pain with all the things you gotta unhook, unbolt, etc etc ? just wondering what you think.

Well, if you've never done it before, it can be a bit intimidating - but it need not be. I can do a complete R&R in about 3 hours. It just takes a little practice.

It's really not as hard as it looks. It is a little involved, but it's really no more work than say, replacing a water pump, or replacing the spark plugs on a small block mounted in a Vega. Just go about it methodically, don't let all there is intimidate you by making you think there's so much to do. Small moves, Ellie - small moves.
