when inverting a sub. does the size of the box matter?

You still use around the same cuft that it suggest. Just now you can make a long flat box, to utilize the same cuft, since the sub wont be in the box mounting depth wont matter, for it to sound decent you still need the recomended size.

the only thing you gain is not having to subtract the volume of the actual speaker itself from the internal volume of the box. Of course the sub will also be out of phase with the rest of the system, which is not a big deal - it may even sound better that way.

if it doesn't, you could simply reverse the polarity of the driver.

true .... but many people with subs in the trunk/hatch reverse polarity the sub(s) anyway.
