turbo/supercharger

Im new to the world of forced induction. Id love to put a turbo/supercharger on my car. To those of you who know bout this shit, which is the better way to go? What are the advantages of a turbo compared to a supercharger? Are they a pain in the ass to maintain? Do they tend to cause a lot of problems? AND my main question, is this a mod u would recommend for everyday driving? THanks

They both have there limitions... Sooo, it depends on what your willing to put up with.

Going turbo more times then not, has very steep/costly learning curve. Where most peeps end-up blowing their first engine. Where as an sc is just basically "plug in play". However it a lot harder to raise the boost with an sc due to intake temps, rather then a turbo. But this problem can be delt with.

When it comes to maintance, there are alot more componets that can fail on a turbo, causing lack of boost, over-boosting, boost creep, drive line failure ect.., as compared to an sc.

Go here for examples...
http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=68242&postid=524784

Sooo, as far daily maintance goes on a sc, all you have to do is keep an eye on the drive belt...

By no means am I slamming turbos, I plan on going with one tooo here in the future... However, these are the probs that are encountered when going FI. It's not as "easy" and "cheap", as peeps try to make it sound. Esepecially if your on a tight budget, and can't afford to build another engine right away or pick-up another drive line. When something blows, as shown from the above link...

There are NO second chances, when things start going wrong with FI...

well shit i dont know if i want to go with FI anymore. If i did id prolly get a SC because Im not a racecar driver and i sure as hell dont want to deal with a lot of problems. Well thanks for the info, it was really helpful.

One more question tho. U said that it can be hard to get a lot of boost out of a sc because of intake air temps. Well without messing with it would it still be a noticable difference when driving?

Also ive noticed that most FI kits come with I/H/E. IF u already have that on your car, is it recommended to install the ones that come with the kit, or can u buy a cheaper kit minus those parts?

Do you know if damaged caused by FI is covered by (most) insurances?

Thanks-
:) ;) :p :sun: :) ;) :p :sun:

That is a great question with many answers. But from what it sounds like you just want to have a fast street car. In my opinion i would go with a sc... ADV:Jackson:no fabrication on your part, powr is always there, sound great, can be a sleeper with it, and alot less matinence;Vortech:has blow off valve, can have inter/after cooler, sounds like a turbo.DisADV:Jackson:run worse in humid heat, only so much boost can be applied (13 or less),you have to replace manifold, and intake temps;vortech:boost raises arithmically ex. 3grand=3psi,8grand 8psi,not sure but i think you have to replace charger and pulley to boost a significant amount more. Another advantage a that got erased for JRSC is hit full boost a low rpm. Turbo's:Adv:create more boost if needed, sound great, intercooler looks good, can ajust boost by push of button (w/ electric boost controller),also there are very many little/big things you can do to create more power;disadv:alot of tuning, alot of matenece, not as much longevity as a supercharger, most turbos (even kits) reguire some fabrication to fit, and there can be many reasons why you lose power. Dont get me wrong though i love turbos. but learn from me do your homework and if at all possible DO NOT buy a used kit. One last thing i dont know how mechanically inclined you are but if you are having someone else put your FI on make SURE they have good experience and see how satisfied there previouse customers are and what problems they have had. Good luck w/ your desision!

here's a tad bit more info since i noticed you got a prelude SH. not the easiest car to boost. with the problems SH luders face with the jrsc, more SH luders face even more problems with turbos. and in fact i think greddy is the only manufacturer of turbochargers for the SH, otherwise you'll have to fork even more money for a custom job. and from what i've been told, the Greddy turbo for the lude is shit.

also the ATTS unit on your lude is incapable of handling greater than 250whp. so if you're gonna be putting down more than that, your ATTS will just be dead weight on your car coz it won't be working. and we're all aware of the prelude's weight problem already. my advice is go for the jrsc. i have one on my SH and i love it. i'm not having any problems with it at all (knock on wood). my car's far from a race car, but it's quite a fast street car with the jrsc on it.

check out preludeonline .com FI forum. there are plenty of FI luders there that can help you out. unfortunately, it's now a paysite so you'll have to fork out about $6 to post. if you have any questions regarding the jrsc for the SH, email me. i'll be glad to help you out as much as i can.

Where does a T-25 fall in the line between T3 and T4?

I dont know to much about turbo's but i do know that a T-25 is a very tiny turbo. I think that is what comes factory on an eclipse. T3-T4 ball bearing turbo's have relativly quick spool and can hold a good amount of boost. A big nasty turbo is a T-88 I am pretty sure it is capable of 30+psi. sorry if i didnt answer your question.:buck
