Help!!! No Brakes!!

When I brought the car home, the brake pedal was very spongy, and the car wouldn't end up stopping until the pedal hit the floor. So, we changed the front pads, rotors and calipers and bled the brakes. After that was done we took it for a test drive and the brakes were WORSE! The pedal would hit the floor, and the car would still be rolling! And to add to the confusion, the BACK brakes, which we didn't even touch, started grinding and sounded like they were dragging, without the pedal being touched...just during normal acceleration. The car isn't losing any fluid....but my master cylinder is the original one the car was built with, could that be the problem? I'm taking it to the garage because I'm completely at a loss for words. I have no idea what this could be! Any tips, boys?

Sorry i think it's the master cylinder, you said the pedal fell to the floor? Also, umm dragging drum brakes? is the parking brake stuck? If not it's also 'probably' the master cylinder's fault also. Someone back me up, I'm no mechanic.

It kinda sounds like air in the lines but you should replace an old master anyway.

Take a look at the back brakes first to find the noise. Brake hardware or lining may have come loose.

When I had my 96 Chevy Pu my master brake booster or cylinder went out. That is why my brake peddle went to the floor. Good luck...

Does the light on the dash come on?

It could be either the master cylinder (more likely) or the proportioning valve (less, but still, likely).

yeah the light comes on when the pedal is pushed to the floor. I hope it's the master cylinder...

I've never heard someone say that before, unless they were really really drunk and then...no not that either.

You knew that buying this car would mean restoring it so it's no big deal. Just get it over with.
