Stay away from Alero... And the 2.2 or 2.4 is a basic 4 banger not like a Honda 4 banger.. You won't get any good performance out of it..

Ecotec's are probly the best gm 4cyl and it is whats in the Cobalt (i think).
IMO they are better than import 4cyl .

You'll either hav a kickass Ecotec or a really crappy one.
If its been taken care of, as with any auto, It should be a dependable ride.

The newer the better

so why should i stay away from the alero?? well if its the same as the cobalt engine then i bet i could do better than an import.

Hint, Old-mobile was so good they aren't around anymore..

Get a Honda, all it needs is oil.. lol

Personally I'd take the 4 banger in a ('90) Prelude Si over any other 4 banger engine..

The 2.2 and the 2.4's are not the same. The 2.2 is in fact an Ecotec engine. It was developed under a partnership between Lotus and GM. The 2.4 is a pretty old design which has been used for a long time in GM cars dating back to the early 90's I believe.

Comparing the two, the 2.2 is a lot smoother and quieter than the 2.4. I've never heard of anyone have any sort of engine-related issues with the 2.2. As the 2.4 ages, they seem to have head gasket issues. The 3.4's are notorious for bad intake manifold gaskets.

As for power, there is a slight difference. The 2.2 gets 140 hp at 5600 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The 2.4 gets 150 hp at 5600 rpm and 155 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. However, dispite a very mild advantage in power over the 2.2, the 2.4 gets worse MPG. The 2.4 is rated at 21city/29 highway while the 2.2 is rated at 24city/32 highway.

In my opinion I would go for the 2.2. It's a quieter engine and more refined. You may have a little less power (barely noticeable, if at all), but you'll be getting much better gas mileage over the 2.4. When I was looking for an Alero I test drove cars with all three of the engines. I went with the 3.4 V6 because I really liked the power, but between the 2.4 and the 2.2 it would have been a no-brainer.

thanks alot for your help!! i would go with the V6 too but i want a 5spd so thats out of the question. this would be my DD so gas mileage would be somewhat of an issue. I want the motor that is easily modded and can see pretty good performance. im used to having alot of power so thats important. so i guess i go with the 2.2 then!!

Ya the new 2.2 Ecotecs are much quieter and more reliable.

Tho I really dislike any 4cyl's .
My V6(3.4) gets better gas mileage then the 2.2 also :p

I average 25-26 city and 30+mpg on the highway.
