2002 Alero front end noise

Well I have had this problem for a while now. What happens is when I am at slow speeds, the front left wheel gives off a squeeling, grinding, pulsating noise. This happens when going at low speeds, seems louder when turning, and all the way until I stop. I have changed the pads and rotors numerous times, but the sound always comes back very shorty. When in the shop, the mechanic said when he puts it up on the lift he doesnt hear the sound until the car is on the ground when he test drives it. He changed the wheel bearing and it did nothing to the sound. He didnt want to test the CV joint until he was sure that that was the problem bc it is so much work.

For some reason, when I get an underbody wash the sound almost goes away, but comes back when it dries.. also the sound seems to fade when it is very rainy out. Dunno if this would help any conclusions.

I've seen numerous threads about pulsating noises on front tires with Aleros, but I am not sure what I can do to mine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your problem sounds like either the upper strut mount/load bearing or the control arm bushings.

You said something that caught my eye. You said you've changed the pads & rotors numerous times, but the sound always comes back shortly. That implies that the sound goes away for at least a while when you change the pads & rotors.

Sounds like it could still be brake related. Possibly a caliper sticking. What kind of pads / rotors are you putting on? I would recommend a higher quality drilled rotor with some upgraded pads the next time you change them.

I would also doubt that it's got anything to do with the CV joint, especially based on what your symptoms are. Don't let the mechanic change the CV's unless he can prove that there's a problem there. That could be a lot of expense for nothing.

I had the same problem. It was a mystery until the service manager found a memo from GM about the tire interacting with the rim and creating noise. (that is why the noise goes away when it is wet. essentially, it is being lubricated) Gm replaced the front tires under warranty. I am kicking myself, however, because when it came time to rotate, the noise came back-I should have stuck to my guns and had them replace all 4 tires.
