I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado extended cab. I just noticed that my steering column is starting to make noise when I turn to the left. I haven't brought it is yet ( I am waiting for my next oil change to do so) but if they need to change it, it will be the third time within 2 years. What's going on with these shafts?

I have just learned to live with it... From what I understand there is still no permanent fix. They refuse to re-engineer the part and keep building it the way it was

I just test drove a 2005 2500HD with 21k miles and it had the steering wheel noise. It really bothered me.

I just noticed it on mine the other day for the first time. 2006 with 3800 miles on it now. I was going to take it in and I thought they would just grease something. That SUCKS if there is no fix for it!

I have a 2000 with 153k and I have never heard anything.. What kind of noise do you here? is there a vibration associated with it?

We need to know what type of sound it is before we can say whether it is fixable or not.
My truck makes a high pitched sound when I turn to the left. They told me it was probably the pressure relief valve on the power steering pump. Apparently they can't fix it because most people can not hear it. In fact 5 different mechanics listened to it and none of them could hear it.

I thought for a minute you were talking about the clicking feeling that I can feel in the wheel when I turn left . I don't notice it as much with my big set of tires as i do with stock size . Rob

It is a knocking noise when I turn to the left. They change the short steering shaft twice and that stopped it for a while. Now it is coming back.

I will have to watch for it. I have a ford that has that knocking sound in the steering shaft.

Plenty of money to pay the BIG WIGS their multi-million dollar salaries and extremely generous benefit packages...... more money made in ONE year than the typical Chvy buyer makes in a lifetime of work but......
no money to design a problem-free shaft or, perhaps, add one little zerk to allow those buying their sub-par product to keep the thing full of grease?
Bought my first ever GMC product in 2004.
Kinda' doubt I will ever buy any GMC product again.
