My father and I are going to rebuild his Mustang, the engine is outside the body. He had it bored .30 over, forged internals installed,he has 351 CJ heads he's going to add, also he has a ford 9in rear end so no problems there. I figure that is going to make 300+ horse power. We want it to have closer to 400 Horse with a good amount of toruqe. Does anyone have suggestions for preformance?

Never heard of 351 cj heads. I dont think they made the 351c in '72 either, I think they where '69-'71. I wouldnt be too hard to make 400hp out of a 351. If its a 351w I can tell you how to make 400fwhp easy. I just made 517rwhp with mine and will be pushing 600rwhp in a week or so. Just need to know more specifics, is your 351 a windsor or a cleveland?

Look up 351 Cobra Jet, they were in Grand Torino's and Mustang's the CJ and the H/O are very rare engine's. Labeled the Q and R code.

Seems with more research that a Boss 351 is the best 351 engine made 335 horse stock, used in the pantera, heads are 32V they cost 12,000 dollars for a set. Those were sets that are created. Just figured that out.

I guess when I think CJ I always think of the 428 Cobra Jet. Good info and thanks for the corection. I'm not a big cleveland fan so I dont know as much about them. But I do know that the bigger C heads need more rpm and can be a turd on the street. Thats just what I've heard from a couple "old timers". I'd say with the smaller C heads, a well fit cam which would depend on their flow characteristics and a lower profile single plain intake should net you close to your goal. But you would probably have to spin the motor over 6000 rpms to make that power. Mine made 517rwhp at 5700rpms. To make 400hp N/A you would probably need some work done to the heads and a pretty lumpy cam. You may need a larger Vic Jr style intake if that be the case. Since you already have the heads you want to use and they are the bigger C heads then this would probably be your best option.

My dad always told me that stock W's wern't good power engine's. He said and seen people rev a W into the 6k range a few times and it blows the oil gasket, so basicly you hear. *rev* *rev* *rev* *sputter* *quit*. W's were also fairly weak engine's but I suppose anything can be made great. You should try to find some C heads and put them on your engine, bunch of W fan's tell me they make a W way better.

they do indeed make the W way better. my uncle used to race a late model thunderbird with a 351w. when he had w heads he was only about as fast as everyone else. when he put cleveland heads on it he had way more power than everyone else. thats when the track he raced at started screwing with him to try to get him to not race. cause every other car was a chevy and he kept winning. im a big fan of clevelands. you should be able to make it pretty fast, since they can flow so well. you know the reason ford decided to stick with the windsor is because its more compact, they were thinking about switching completely to clevelands for a while. thats pretty cool that you have one of the rare ones.

use a set of speed pro L2348F pistons eagle H-beam rods 290/300 .512 solid tappet cam single plane high rise intake holly 750 double pumper mechanical sec.. buy the oil restrictors for the mains. make sure you get the heads redone and put a set of good springs in them use some roller rockers and a good ignition and spin it all day at 8k
