PS pump replacement tips?

holy cow!

Took a look at the wifes whinning PS pump yesterday (96 4.3 AWD astro), How do you get that thing out?

I have access to a lift, but it didn't really look much easier from underneath, maybe a few bolts would be more accesible. It looks like I'm gonna need to pull the airbox, fan shroud and fan to make a big enough hole to extract it, and dropping some steering linkage parts wouldn't hurt either.

Anyone have any friendly advice?

well, guess I was right. Pull the shroud. Another thing I noticed yesterday, no holes in the pulley for the bolts. You have to pull the pulley in the vehicle... stupid engineers. #&@!!

Pulling that pulley and re-installing it are the worst job I have come across working on these vans and my b-bodies.

my PS pully puller isn't that big, hopefully it'll fit down there. I'll have to look and verify that it'll clear the radiator... Deffinatly won't be using the impact.

With the fan sroud removed, there should be plenty of space. The pullers are not exceedingly long:

I took mine out with the pully in place and took it to the auto parts store and had them transfer it to the new one for me. Autozone rents the tool for free. you have to buy it then if you bring it back within 60 days they refund you your money.

I have a puller like the one you show bowtie but had to buy the other one that removes "and" re'installs the pully, does the style you show work on pulling the pullies off the power steering pump?
