Used muffler ok?

I found a couple really cheap mufflers on Ebay that I want. They are both used, but are only a couple years old with no rust. I only need one of them, but I'd naturally bid on the better of the two :)

Are slightly used mufflers OK to re-use? Basically, I'd save about $150 if I get a used one vs new.

They are fine if they really are rust free and if the connector tubes are in good condition and can create a good seal with your present system. I imagine they were cut off their old systems, so I wonder what kind of end tubes they have on them and how they would fit with your car.

Not to mention do they need to be shipped?

One is in florida, the other in Tennesee, so yeah whichever one I go with would have to be shipped. They both look allright, and the welds look OK too and there is plenty of extra tube left to weld new pipe.

But I'm thinking that I should pay the extra $20 or so and get the nicer of the two mufflers from Florida.

Where do you live? You could get a nice muffler CHEAP at pull a part. http://pullapart.com. There are about six locations in the southeast.

I live in SW Missouri, near the OK and KS state lines. I don't know of any dirt cheap pick and pulls. I do know of one reasonable pick and pull, but their H-body selection is wearing thin, mainly due to me.

I have bought a few used exhaust pipe/mufflers from U-pick yards, and never had a problem with them. Often in these yards, they torch off the cat from the exhaust, so their cut edge is rough. I just make a new cut with a cut-off disc on my drill, and either use an adapter and clamps to mate the two pipes, or drive it to an exhaust shop and get them to weld it. Buying it online, like spinne1 said, make sure the exhaust is in good shape, because you could easily be buying a lemon. Really dig for u-pick yards in your area, I have been driving 1 hour to a yard for the past 2 years, just to find out there is a great yard just 15 minutes from my place that I never knew about til I really dug on www.yellowpages.ca (don't know about american counterparts but there should be business search engines to help ya find one)

Allright, I found one on Ebay that was almost new for $46 to my door. A new one off Ebay ran close to a $100, and one from the Flowmaster website runs significantly more...$150ish I think.

The big problem with a used muffler is where the clamp goes it makes an indentation. They sell expanders at the parts store if you can't get them together. Some times you can drive something inside to open them a little. A piece of wood rounded.

Mine was cut at the welds, so no problems with clamps. I'll just take my dremel with a grinding wheel to smooth out the cuts a bit. I'm getting it installed next week :)

sooner or later, the muffler would rust from the inside-out... just because one of the by-products of combustion is water vapor.

i even saw some stainless ones rust @ the weld points after a few winters...

aluminized/pipes, mufflers? same thing...

but since exhaust work is one of the easiest things to do, even w/out a welder, go for it if you like replacing them every few years.
