I have a 96 LS and is now my "extra" car, I need to get it inspected this month and the check engine light is on. I live in the DFW metro and they make you take an emissions test inspection. Does any one have any suggestions as to how i can get it to pass or where i can get one... I am not sure if it will pass because it smokes some while at idle after it has warmed up, but it smokes from under the hood, I think it has a small oil leak on the back side of the motor somewhere. I also would like to know if anyone has some suggestions on what kind of motor I can put in it.
thx

Change the engine because of an oil leak? What is the problem with getting it scanned to see what the code is and going from there so it can be fixed to pass inspection?

Smoking under the hood? Yeah it sounds like an oil leak, but I wouldnt replace it. I live in DFW too and I know how it is, but I would suggest doing a tune up and pretty sure that it would pass if you did that.

ok, i didnt explain very well... I have replaced so much on this car last year to get it inspected and it didnt work. I replaced the spark plugs and wires, O2 sensors, cadilatic converter, the egr valvue, the ratiator (i know that isnt really emissions but it sprung a leak). Now the dealership looked at is and told me that I could either invest some and "partially" fix the oil leak or I could invest a lot more and fix the oil leak completely. well needless to say I kinda told him thanks a lot for his opinion. anyway, for now i just need to get it inspected by the end of october otherwise my stupid apartments will tag it to be towed. - if you think it is a tune up that it needs, maybe elabrate on what kind of tune up.

So have you ran the thing for codes yet or no? Maybe you're problem will be there, and also do you remember exactly what part of the inspection it didnt pass?

As far as the oil leak, it's most likely the oil pump drive o-ring has failed. It is essentially a distributor with the top cut off, and can be seen under the throttle body on the drivers side of the engine. The throttle body will have to be removed to gain access to change it. As far as failing emission testing, unless the leak is causing you to fail the visual part, we need more info as previously stated to help you there.

one thing i can think of right now that I havent done is have the injectors cleaned, would that help? if so what is the best place to take it to get this done? it has 175,000+ miles on it. I will take it to Auto Zone and have the codes tested tonight and tell ya what it says, but before it came up with 3 codes: multi misfire, egr, o2 sensor.
thx again
