93 toyota pick up 4cyl. knocking and squealing??

A friend of mine has a 93 toyota pick up with a 4 cyl. and one day he started it up and it started knocking and squealing within the engine. He shut it off and had it towed to his house and it been sitting there for a couple of years. The truck is in really good shape, 130,000 miles and he said give him $500. for it. He said it didn't burn any oil,run good and no problems with it. It still started last time he started it.
My question is what could be causing this knocking and squealing?
The truck is worth putting a reman. short block in it at $1000. cost. I'm hoping its just the crank/ rod bearings and I can just replace those. I'm no mechanic, I'm just guessing. Is there any other issues with doing a rebuild that I should know of?

If it is bearings in the motor, you might find a cheaper motor with a warranty from an engine importer. I paid $250- for a 22R in 1992 and got a twelve month, twelve thousand mile warranty. Check the classified ads at autoparts stores to find an importer.
Another option to finding out what is really wrong is to have a mechanic look at it and give you a report. Check the yellow pages for mobile mechanics and see what they charge to inspect a vehicle. Are you a AAA member? Some AAA clubs have this service for low cost. If you are going to have to pay to get the truck towed to your residence, consider putting the money towards a AAA membership. Generally AAA membership doesn't cost much more than one tow and you will get other benefits.

If it just crank bearings, you may have to have the crank turned.
Check the timing chain and tensioner. If one of the guides failed you may have a knocking sound.

The truck took a little to get started, but once it did it starts right up. It seems to idle well, other than the knocking. After running it I checked the dipstick and the oil seemed a little milky.
So what is it?
I taked to a guy today that has done some work for me before and I can trust that he will do the job right. He is a very experianced mechanic and works on the side at his house. He said he would pull the old engine and install the new or used engine for $400. Is that a good deal.

Milky oil, sounds like coolant mixed with the oil and the bearings didn't like it. Labor price for an engine swap seems ok for where I live. Don't know about the cost of living where you live. Check for an engine importer. Most used engines from Japan have between 30 and 40 thousand miles on them and usually come with a warranty. You should be able to get one of these motors for about $500- delivered.

Where can I find an engine importer? I have been searching and I don't beleive I have found one for a good price with ow mile or I would have saved the link. I would deffinatly take an engine with low miles at that price.

I have found them listed in classified ads usually available at autoparts stores. Look through the ads for places that sell Japanese motors.

I found a complete engine with 93,000 on it for $600.00. Is this a fair deal? No core needed, so I can keep it and work on a rebuild if needed.

It comes with a 90 day warranty. I have to drive two hours to get it. There is nothing close and everything else I found is more and would have to be shipped.

If it was well maintained, it should run for years. Overall I think you are getting a good deal.

I'm doing the instalation, I have it ready to come out (saving $400.) and yes I had planned all those parts you mentioned, plus timing set, oil pump, and water pump.

What would be a good clutch to get? I don't need a heavy duty, high performance clutch, just a good quality.

The one in my truck currently has 110,000 miles on it and I don't know when it is going to need to be replaced, it's working fine. It is the stock one for my truck and I bought it from Toyota. Maybe if you were to start a new thread asking what is the best clutch, you might get a few different opinions.
