98 jetta engine codes

I recently bought a 98 jetta GT, and the service engine light has come on. I've never owned a VW, but I know on GM cars and such you can either bridge a wire harness under the dash, or turn the ignition on and off three times to get the light to blink a code. Does anyone know how to get a code reading without going to the dealership?:screwy:

nope, but you can read the codes from the obd port located to the right of the ash tray..
