Hi Everyone
I am new to this forum well I decided to get back into modeling it's been a very long time since I built a model. I picked up a Tamiya Benetton B192
this will be mostly an out of box build I might try some CF in spots. Here are a few pics of the engine.

Enjoy Dave

Dave, welcome to AF. It's always good to see F1 models. The build looks very clean so far. Good luck with the CF decals.
If you need any help with the decals check out the FAQ's in the first Car Modeling forum?

Hi Dave.

Welcome to the forum... it's always nice to have another F1 modeller in here. Nice start on the engine on the B192. You have some really clean lines there, especially on the trumpets at the top. I picked this kit up recently, so I will be watching this build with interest.

I hadn't noticed just how similar the engine is to the Ford in the Jordan 191 that I am building at the moment. I suppose it makes sense though, being as there is only a year between the cars.

Are you planning on modelling Martin's or Michael's ride?

All the very best,
BillyPee

Hi Dave,

Any updates on this model Dave?

I got the Formula Perfect Manual for this model recently, so the B192 is definitely a contender for my next model. I notice that your yellow rear cowling parts are green on the reference pictures. Are you planning to green decal over them? Any lessons you learn with fitment of pieces, order of attaching, etc, etc, would be most welcome.

I know progress seems slow I have been working on the monocoque trying to get the paint scheme right. I had some bleed of the green through the tape on to the yellow lots of sanding and repainting going on. Since this is my first model in a long time it's been a little show. As for fitting pieces if I was to do it over I would have place the drivers head rest into the monocoque before primer was applied and filled the seems around that part. I also would have painted the inside of the monocoque black first. I am going to just brush paint that now because I don't want any black on to the yellow. I have been working on the under tray, front wing while paint dries on the monocoque
I do have the cockpit finished it's been a great learning experience I can post some pic's later. As for the yellow on the rear cowling parts I didn't notice the decal number only the paint number I have since repainted the green

Hi Dave,

You have a nice and smooth paint job on the monocoque. Bravo.

I had some bleed of the green through the tape on to the yellow lots of sanding and repainting going on.

Shame about the bleed through... I've been through that and share your pain :uhoh:. Not wanting to repeat the problems I had with the 2 tones scheme on the Williams FW24 I made doubly sure the tape was tight and I applied a coat of clear over the first colour so that if the 2nd colour did bleed, it would be easier to remove the bleed without damaging the first.

I also would have painted the inside of the monocoque black first. I am going to just brush paint that now because I don't want any black on to the yellow.

I have thought about the order in which to paint a monocoque (outside or inside first) many times over... and basically I paint the outside first not because it is the best order (it probably isn't as you risk damaging all your hard work whilst you work on the interior which no one will see). You will notice that my Jordan's interior is unpainted. I plan to not paint the interior at all and just cover the overspray with Carbon Fibre (CF) decals. Some people insist that CF decals should be applied over black paint but I don't believe you can tell the difference on the CF I have from ScaleMotorSports (SMS). If you are not using CF (and I don't blame you as it is really, REALLY, boring to apply) then I think that painting with a brush would be the quickest and safest solution

As for the yellow on the rear cowling parts I didn't notice the decal number only the paint number I have since repainted the green.

I have just dug out the instructions for this model and I can see how easy it would be to think the parts were yellow. I will need to keep my eye out for that.

I'd be interested to find out what paints you are using for the yellow and green colour scheme. From your recent posting of the monocoque, the yellow looks very yellowey (like the yellow on the top half of a late 80's/early 90's Williams (TS-16)). Are you using TS-47 Chrome yellow, and if so does it look more 'orangey' in real life? The green looks like a superb match.

All the very best and keep up the good work and the posts.

Kind regards,
BillyPee

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments.
Billy

The yellow paint is TS-47 Chrome yellow and TS-35 Park Green

I was going to try C/F decals on the side and back of the monocoque I pick up a sheet of Detail Masters C/F I applied it to one of the radiator ducks for a test to see if I could do it well it didn't turn out to bad. My problem was that the decals would just peel off the sheet as I was cutting it out they say put clear coat over the decals before using them well I tried that it made it easy to use but I didn't like the way they looked. Maybe if I had sprayed a flat clear instead of the Tamiya clear it might have turn out better.

Dave

Cool. It's probably just my eyes or the way that cameras and computers have a habit of changing the colours.

I haven't used the Detail Masters CF so I don't know what to say. I have used Studio 27 and SMS CF decals and never had a problem with the decals coming loose whilst cutting. It sounds like a complete faff having to clear over them before you cut them out. I really like the SMS CF decals are they are much thinner and respond to MicroSet and MicroSol much better than the Studio 27 CF decals. By the way, if you dont already have MicroSet/Sol then I highly recommend that you get some as I consider it essential if you are going to get your CF to contour to the shape of your parts... the first model I did with CF I didn't know about MicroSet/Sol and had a torrid time of it, essentially resorting to cut out little pieces at a time. :banghead:

Hope you find these comments useful. All the very best, BillyPee

Dave,

definately agree with BillyPee, use SMS C/F decals or Studio 27. They are all I use and have never had a problem with them, you certainly dont need to coat them in anything before cutting then out.
As for Microsol/Microset - a modelers essential piece of kit, it works a treat and I wouldnt do without it!

Just a quick tip, dont get so close to your model when you are taking pics and if possible take a picture outside in natural light or under a white light, they will come out much better, although your last pic is really good.

Keep up the great work

Sean

hi, great detail work and love the engine. its unlucky about the bleeding on the monoque. however, after seeing billypee's post about clearcoating, i've just had a brain wave. after laying down the masking tape, why don't you clearcoat over the tape. it would seal the tape, and any bleeding of the clearcoat under the tape would be invieable under the final clearcoat.

Sounds like a great idea. If anyone has tried this, let me know what it comes out like. The only downside I can see it that your body colour paint would then be sitting on top of clear and not primer. Don't know whether that would make too much difference though.

Here is an update don't want the thread to die I finished painting the nose cone, front wing, and front upper and lower arms. I have decaled the nose cone I am very happy with the way it came out.

Here are the wheels these gave me a fit the first three yellow decals went on fine the forth wrinkled. I also managed to trash one Good Year decal so one wheel not going to have one and I broke another.

Hi Dave, it all looks fabulous, paintwork, decals everything.

You will find that some tyre decals will perish on every build. You can get replacements from F1 Specialties very cheaply <$10 for a set... or you can just take them from your next model (just remember that the yellow decals are from 1993 onwards so are for the thinner tyres).

All the best,
BillyPee

Steve the yellow is TS-47 crome yellow and the TS-35 park green.

Thanks Dave. This is one of those models I'd really like to build (the Williams FW13B is another) but the colour scheme puts me off.Not the colours themselves but the thought of masking it up knowing there is no room for error. You sure have made a nice job of it though. You just may have tempted me into getting the kit myself.I think it has just been re-issued.

Steve if you can mask the McLaren you can mask these. The only reason I am building the Williams is because my son bought it. The color scheme for the FW13B has been troubling me plus this is only my second model and because of this forum and people like yourself and others here you know who you are, That I am even considering building the FW13B so go for it .:grinyes:

Well here is a small update I have every thing done but the rear wing, and rear view mirrors waiting for the paint to dry.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d79/DaveSans/car.jpg

Now for the bad news I made a big blunder I was attaching the nose to the front wing. When I push down to hard and broke the nose from part A-15 :swear: I should have know better.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d79/DaveSans/nose1.jpg
The paint chipped on both sides decals where ripped well I am going to strip the paint off, and order new decals there is no way of repairing it and making it not look good :shakehead. Well I will contune to work on the C/F of my Williams and get the paint started on the body in the mean time.
