Gear Seection Indicator

1996 Carvan with 3.3 liter and EATX. The gear selector indicator (little square around the gear selected on IP) does not show me that P or N have been selected, all other selections are identified. Normal (the car not me) or not ?

98 Grand Caravan here, and yes, each selection will have a square around it when selected

Great, so I am not going crazy. Now, what would cause the P and N selections to be missing the square around the letter?
