91 sonoma wont flash trouble codes

Have 91 Sonoma 2.5 4 cylinder. Occasionally when start up check engine light stays on for a while , then goes off, or goes off if restart.
Problem is when I try to check trouble codes, computer will only flash 1 time, Will not enter diagnostic mode. Possible dead ecm ? What controls spark advance and retard? Have trouble with spark knock all time.

Stop by advance or autozone and use one of their ODBI scanners and see if that works.
