my newest turbo'd bike version

Some might find this stuff interesting. Finished another system for my 1999 Kawasaki ZRX1100. This is probably the 5th system I've made for this bike....I like trying different things. This is the best one yet by far, IMO, and I really think I'm done. I found the best of all worlds, peak HP capability, best placement of components, best spool characteristics. I'm very very happy with it.
Its a T28 turbo off of a japanese spec skyline, roughly 280hp peak capability. I'm running 18psi on pump gas, and she hits full boost around 5K RPM's. I haven't dyno'd it of course, but I would expect around 250rwhp.
The intercooler is off of a VW passat 1.8L turbo engine, that I cut the tanks off and made my own. The header is 1.25" OD pipe.
Engine is stock other than forged 8:1 pistons (stock bore, 76mm x 58mm, 1052cc), stronger valve springs and a lockup clutch. Using stock 36mm carbs, and an aftermarket ignition system that allows me to retard timing on boost. Running around 28* total timing at peak boost (pulls timing at 10psi)
The rest of the bike is mostly stock, the swing arm has been extended 6". I'll try to get some full-bike shots soon. These pics were taken the night of the first test ride

Your a fucking nutter arn't you Bob?
Your pushing what, 500hp/ton?
And driving it all trough ONE wheel?
At least you have a front wheel heater, to keep that front tyre nice and warm :D

haven't done an accurate weighing of the bike, but the entire turbo assembly (header, turbo, dump pipe, intercooler) is 25 pounds. The cold pipe, and air box weigh less than 2 pounds.
The rear exhaust is removable, but weighs about 18 pounds.
The bike stock, weighs about 550 pounds gassed up. Stock exhaust is quite heavy, so after its all said and done, I'm probably around 560 pounds with just the dump pipe. 580 or so with the full exhaust.
Not sure if you're refering to the metric ton....
The front tire does touch the ground now and then....and yes, I've been told I'm crazy a few times :)

i reckon he's probably pushing more, maybe 800-850bhp per metric ton.

Reminds me of this http://videos.streetfire.net/video/f/c42bc552-5819-4469-8665-981d007ae795.htm
ghost rider is quite famous, and his bike is way way sicker than mine. They aren't lieing in the video, it really is making 500hp to the rear wheel. His bike weighs less than mine too.
The hayabusa is a much better platform for turbo'ing, as far as the engine goes. There are many drag race bikes making over 600, even 700 hp and you'd be surprised how little modification has been done to the engine to acheive that. Thats out of a 1.3L engine.
But I'm not looking to break any records on the dyno sheet or 1/4 mile. Just wanted a fun, low profile bike. I can't even describe what its like to ride....it makes all naturally asperated bikes feel like mopeds.

Under statement?
560 pounds is about 254kg's.
That means your pushing around 1,000hp per Ton (metric ton).
Add the weight of a rider and it comes down a bit of course, more around the 800hp per ton mark, but its still very, very insane.
If I ever make it to the states Im going to have to find my way to your place.
I'll just look around for low flying motor bikes.

I'm a tall skinny guy, about 185 pounds fully geared up.
I loan my bike out to people all the time, its the best advertising I can think of, on convincing them they should pay me to turbo their bike. I have a dual stage boost controller on it, low setting is 7psi, high is 18psi. I set it on the low setting and then tell them if the low setting doesn't scare them, the high setting should
Just make sure you're going in a straight line when you give it full throttle.

You have any trouble blowing thru carbs with leaks, balance or fuel pressure? seals and venting? Not really. The throttle shaft seals seem to like leaking eventually on these particular carbs (Keihen 36CVK), have had to replace them once, some 20K miles ago. But they are cheap.
Otherwise, nothing really to report. They work flawlessly.

Is that for the ceramic exhaust wheel version?
Sick bike Bob. Nice job on the packaging too.
Is it worth wrapping the header pipes behind and below the intercooler or does all the air going backwards keep it nice and cool?

I can't speak with experience on the T28, but the T25, which is very simular, just lived 40K miles with the same abuse.
You are right though, I dont' spend much time on boost.....it only takes a couple seconds to be going stupid fast.
If I have problems, I have a spare
I'm not much on header wraps. I've had enough trouble with headers fracturing.... I did once put a sensor in my charge pipe to check the temps, even at full boost, never saw anything over 110*F Thats pretty dang good.

Some questions I missed earlier
It looks a little odd with the extended swing arm, but im guessing you need it to have any hope of keeping it on 2 wheels.
How does it handle though?
And it must sound fucking awsome.
I personally like the looks of the extended arm, but everyone has their own taste. Even with the 6" over, it tries to lift the front tire even in 4th gear (5 speed), although you have to be doing it intentionally in 4th.
It actually handles very well. I was worried about that too when I first installed it. But since then, I've even done a road course track day and it wasn't slowing me down much at all in the corners.
I do have a short sound file if you want to hear what it sounds like. The twin cans make it very very quiet, which is what I was aiming for. Most turbo bikes run a very short dump pipe, which I've done, but I didn't like the noise level....but I kept it an option for this system for when I'm drag racing or doing road courses.
I didn't rev the piss out of it for the recording...it was pretty late at night
http://home.comcast.net/~zrxturbo/dualexhaust/dualE.WAV
I plan on eventually taking some video of it from the cockpit, but I'll be using a crappy camera :p
About how much do you charge for a turbo install??
Depends on the bike and what you want. Anywhere from $1K on up. I'm still getting my feet wet on this, so I haven't been able to justify charging insane amounts of money :icon16:

the shorter the wheel base on any vehicle, the easier it transfers weight. Too much weight transfer and you lift the front end off the ground.
Lifting the front end off the ground is counterproductive to accelerating quickly. THere's also the lack of steering and braking when the front end is off the ground
My wheel base is about 63" which isn't all that long. There are many stock bikes that are longer than that, although most sport bikes are in the 55-57" range.
Drag race sanctions usually put a limit on wheel base length to help keep competition even. In general, the longer wheel based vehicle has an advantage (assuming they tune the chasis for it).
Handling and acceleration are compromises. I'm pretty happy with my bikes overall compromise. Honestly, with the stock wheelbase, the bike wasn't even ridable in 1st and 2nd gear. Anything over 1/4 throttle and it would bruise your chest from wheelying so hard.

that's an awsome setup man. i can't wait until i get a bike, i've been dreaming of a turbo motorcycle but everyone always tells me "what's the point, they're already stupid fast" but that's not the point, it's something that nobody does so it sets them apart from all other bikes. i want a 600cc bike because it'll be easier to learn on and i can get the power of a 1L bike without the weight and without buying a new bike. nice one man, can't wait until the vids.

the line between the 1L SS' and the 600cc SS' are getting smaller and smaller these days. Maybe 20 or 30 pounds between most of them.
They are all plenty sick on the power to weight, thats for sure. Many believe that the 600's are easier to ride faster, because the power is easier to use, but I say hog wash! No such thing as accessive! :D
I know one guy that turbo'd a GSXR600 and made over 200hp, but it was somewhat peaky in the power curve.
My next project is to turbo my new bike, which is a DRZ400SM, 295 pounds, 35hp stock. Nothing can touch it in the tight twisties, but its gutless at the higher speeds. I figure 60-80hp shouldn't be too hard to pull off. Should make it a crazy ride! Many ask my "why bother?", but its hard to explain to someone thats not interested in this stuff :)

nah, I'm a cheap bastard. Leaving the engine dead stock. To put it in perspective, the most tweaked NA DRZ ever dyno'd was 58hp. So my goals aren't so small as they might seem. But I don't want to make a time bomb either. sometimes you're better off leaving the engine stock, because in motorcycles, stock engines are really strong. shaving cylinders and stroking cranks can really reduce reliability.
