Gas tank leak?

My 98 Cherokee was leaking gas from what looks like the top of the tank when my daughter filled it up last week. I have never had this problem before but it was her first time (as a new driver) filling up, so I suspect she overfilled it. No leaking after that inital problem, but I thought I would see if anyone else has seen this.

First..a good rule to teach is not to top off the tank.
Out here in California (Cali) ...we have the vapor recovery hoses and there are signs to discourage topping off.
I have personally experienced the effects of this more than once...where the pressure from fueling will cause the gasoline to spew and "blow out" of the filler and douse you and the side of your Jeep or car with gasoline. Once, I had to rush home and take a shower and another time I went immediately to the car wash to clean off the side of the vehicle.
In your case, I would retighten (or check the tightness of) the hose clamps from the filler to the tank. If you still smell gasoline fumes, you might check the other fuel tank clamps also.

Hi everyone,
I still have the gas tank leak when its too full. Can anyone tell me if its hard to drop the tank to check, or is this best left to professionals?

Your gas tank/system, when low, (2-5 gallons or less), is very easy to deal with. Don't worry about it, just check all the connections thoroughly, and start to rule out blockages/leaks from the tank forward...
~good luck!
