Power steering and brake fluid flush

Yesterday I had my coolant system flushed at the dealership. Some guy took samples of all the fluids and compared them to a chart and advised me my brake and PS fluid was in need of a change.

Anybody have this done and would recommend or is this a money making scam?

If high mileage or several years old it might be worthwhile doing.

Hardly a scam, brake fluid should be flushed and replaced more often. Money making is probably obvios to you. Brake fluid deteriorates as it absorbs moisture. Brake manufactures lab tests show that hydraulic brake systems benefit from having the system flushed as often as you change motor oil. If your hydraulic system were flushed every time the brake pads or shoes were replaced it would be receiving more service than 90% of vehicles being opperated. How many times has your brake fluid been replaced since the car was new? How much do they want to flush your hydraulic system?

P/S fluid also deteriorates over time. Replacing P/S fluid is seldom if ever done. Every 75-100k mi would be good. What procedure do they follow at your dealership to replace all of the fluid? Will the fluid they leave your car with be 100% new fluid of the type your car manufacture calls for?

Severe environmental conditions effect fluids which is why vehicles are tested at the extremes and service intervals are set accordingly.

Most of the statements above are non-sense, Brake fluid flush should be done every 5 years or so, Tranny fluid and filter every 5 years " never flush" . Power stearing every 5 years "never flush" use a turkey baster to suck-out as much of the fluid to can and top-up with new fluid and that is it.

Im gonna have to agree with JustSayGo, brake fluid should be changed every so often. Think about it this way, clean brake fluid is completely clear....go look in your master cylinder and see what color yours is? :) The more moisture your brake fluid absorbs, the lower its boiling point becomes, meaning less effective braking.

Tranny fluid change is recommended by GM to be done every 50,000 miles if you live/drive in harsh conditions, and 100,000 otherwise. IF you have good clean tranny fluid, its likely to prolong the life of your transmission. Which would you rather buy? 25-30 bucks worth of supplies to change your transmission fluid? Or drop a couple grand for a new transmission?
