Has anyone made a Z that can take a Viper on the highway? I'd like to be able to do this, but I want to know what you put into the car to get so much speed. If it's not possible, then I would like to get close. What are some good mods. BTW most of e mods will be custom. I'm looking into an engine management system and a host of other goodies.
But I'd like your opinions. Thanks

Try swapping in a small block chevy bored and stroked to a 427. Build it good and get about 500HP out of it and then add a 150HP shot of nitrous and you will probably take the viper if your car doesn't fall apsrt doing it.

I'm looking to stay with the inline turbo. If I wanted, I could go with a turboed small block, but that's not as fun. I'm trying to keep the current weight balance.

Buy a Viper V10 ha ha. Then you will be able to take a viper. Funny thing is that the V10 will probably fit in the engine bay and weighs less than a small block V8.

not fun !
how dare u!

turbo is d way to go if u want to beat a viper.
i seen a turbo 240sx 72 dautsun that makes round 500hp@wheels with out the aid of the n.o.s. and yes it is a full street car so i say go turbo, and if you have the $ to swap in a v-8 motor why not custom fabraciate a RB26DETT motor from a skyline into the datsun that will make u beat that vipers ass!

n e ways dats my 2 cents

sr20det2nr -- is soooooo...

RIGHT....

A Skyline RB engine would be SWEET. Ive been planning on that swap for my Z for a while now, just havent had the time. I saw a RB25DET in a 280Z in Philly on vacation. I didnt see any Vipers , but the Z blew EVERYBODY that night out of the water-- mustang, camaro, HIGHLY modified honda(computer gizmos and stuff), mitsu, wrx, corvette----
OOps -- there was this car that dusted him --a 93 RX7 twin turbo, oh well, you cant win 'em all.
Anyway, you'd have a couple of options on set ups with RB engines -powerwise and money wise- and a few importers that could get you the clips.

When I finally have the time to do the RB in my Z Ill let you know..

Adios amigo --->

the Z car can take just about anything with the right mods. as far as taking a viper with the L series motor good luck only if the driver is drunk as a mofo. to get that kind or even neer it you will need a motor swap. the propane mod with twin turbos will get you some hella power but not enough to touch a viper.
chevy 350 is a good swap.
rb28dett is a good swap.
i saw someone putting a jaguar V12 into a 240Z the other day that car will rip the hell out of just about anyhing is my guess.
there realy isnt to many engines that wont fit into the datsun

have you tried putting in bigger pistons along with a bigger bore, Upgrading for a Twin Turbo ECU or how about a hi-flow intake and HKS Turbo exhaust. have you ever though of putting in a high performance camshaft.I'm also trying to make one go past 600hp but I haven't gotten there yet.

arthur yes it will fit. and it will fit beautifuly. its a killer swap and if you dont want to install it yourself i can direct you to a company that does them and can get you the skyline engine for around 6k

I have a friend that dropped a bone stock LT1 into a 260Z and it will walk Vipers all day long. He is working on a LS6 in a 75 280Z that motor made 392 hp at the crank. The LT1 was out of a 93 camaro and rated only at 275. Check out hybridZ.org (i think)

If your looking to out run vipers then figure out what your power to weight ratio will be.

And if you decide to build up the Z motor just dont skimp on the quality of the parts and it should handle anything you throw at it as far as boost goes.

i think you can make the l28et still pretty quick. my bros 82 280 runs a low 14 second quartermile with just the hks exhaust 2.5in piping and intake. he is only boosting .62 bar. and has an exhaust manifold leak. but the car is pretty much stock. so with some other mods such as ecu, turbo, fmic, injectors, tires and lightweight rims, etc. the car could prolly hit low 13's easily. i think on the dyno he pulled 178.2 hp and 209.6 lb/ft torque. not bad i think.

Whats the viper run in the 1/4 mile? He wont need 500hp to beat a viper hes so much lighter that with lets say ball park 350hp he would be running close to if not a 10sec 1/4 mile. I mean if dstyle's bother is running a 14sec with under 200hp 350 should get you their.

dstyle since when does a turbo make a mere 1 seconds diffrence. turboed out right that engine will throw down 450hp no effort and run mid 9's

The viper based on 92 to 04 model weights about 3,201.1-3,465.7lb 450-500hp stock 0-60 in 4 sec. compared to the 280zx 79-83 2,650-3,219 -3750 lb. 130-180hp 0-60 in 7sec. that's inclouding turbo and 2+2 models. So you know what you gotta do.

you can make a 10 second inline 6 or faster it is all how much money you have or want to spend. you will have to change the rear axle and have the trans built to withstand the power. i know of a 280 turbo that runs 10 second passes right now which is enough to beat a viper. do your home work or hire someone who knows what their doing, not someone who thinks they know what their doing. its not impossible just expensive.

I have no idea how quick a viper is (Being from Australia and all) but i just purchased a modified 280zx engine with $13000(AUST) spent on the engine. It has forged pistons etc taken back to carbies and has a water cooled t3 turbo. This thing is pumping out 350hp at about 15psi (can handle 24). I have not dropped it in yet because i require a new drive train but this engine was in a 2 ton fx holden and was doing 13 sec 1/4 miles.

I have also been told by dat works in australia that with fuel injection conversion i could be pumping out about 600 hp.

Has anyone else seen or have this kind of power from their z engines. As im pretty sure that the r200 diffs will even handle it. Also any tips on body strengthening or brake upgrades would be appreciated.
