hello everyone. i've meaning to ask about parking on a non-leveled ground. i've got an 98 E320 and i frequently go to mounain places so i got a lot of comments from people about ,when parking, letting the car settle on the handbrake instead of the transmission, if it aint clear it means not letting the car rock back and forth after letting go of the b rakes, but i really dont get the method cause i sometimes push down the handbrake but it still rocks away, so is there a way to get it done.........?

Here's what I would do. When parking on a hill, depress the foot brake, then put the car in neutral to disengage the transmission. With your foot still on the brake, set the handbrake ( I am assuming is properly adjusted and it will hold the car and keep it from moving). After the handbrake is set, put the car in park (auto transmission), or with manual transmission, shut off the engine, then put the car into low gear or reverse.

thanks. well i was told that and i wanna ask if after doing that, is the car supposed to not rock back and forth AT ALL or what is it that should occur?

thanks again

Manual or automatic transmission. Also, is the rocking in both directions or just one direction.

automatic, and it rocks depending on the incline, if im parking with my front downwards it rocks forward and the opposite for upward front, but there's sometimes this annoying back and forth rock, and kinda hard one, like quick back and forth....

thanks

Doesn't sound like to me your handbrake is holding very well. In an automatic transmisson, fluid moves to make the car move, varying pressures exist at different times in the system, and wear and tear cause those to be amplified. If there is some slop in the hand brake, it could take a little bit before it "catches", and you could have some motion in the car before it does. Wear in differentials, u-joints and the like could also add to the motion. Alot of vehicles have slight motion even on level ground. It typically is not enough to cause concern, we anticipate it, and let it go at that.

Without seeing the vehicle, that is about all I can say.
