Exhaust system question.

My son has a 91 GT and there seems to be a leak after the cat. What does the exhaust system consist of. The muffler is hanging at the back but after the cat there is what appears to be a resonator, I think but not sure. Is it needed ? Can the exhaust be run directly to the muffler? Any suggestions.

yea, its a resonator. basically you got the cat up by the exaust manifold and then the flex pipe, then the resonator, and then the muffler. idk how taking off the resonator will sound though, might be bad might be ok. id go all the way and get a custom exaust put on, 2,25 inches with a good resonator and a cheap ebay muffler(anything that flows good).
