98 TDI Jetta

Just purchased the car and now reverse and first and second will not work. It seems like it is going into 3 and 4 no matter where you put the stick when it is at the top or bottom. Even when you push it down and up to go into reverse it will still go forward like in 3rd. Any help would be gratefull.

sounds like either the shifter bracket on the tranmsision is broken or the cables are way out of adjustment..

It was the transmission mount, now everythign is working except reverse. I have to push the stick down and up to get 1 if i jsut go up then it is 2nd. I think I just need to readjust the cable on the bracket but I have tried and tried and it will not work. Thanks for the start though I will see about the reverse.
