This is normal if you have been driving only short distances. It is caused by condensation that collects inside the crank case each time the engine cools. If you drive only short distances the engine never gets hot enough to burn off the condensation. One thing you may want to do is change the pcv if you have one just to make sure it is working properly. It is really bugging you change the oil every 3k miles and you shouldn't have any problems.

parafen based oil is good for doing that in the early quads if thats all it's doing thats completely normal as the steam from the oil cools in the dipstick tube and turns back into a liquid. later models were revised so that it's not so noticable but my 89 has done it from the start and still does it if. if the head gasket is blown u will have several other drivabilty issues which i am sure u can find by seaching the threads. And by the way U must have back pressure for a QUAD 4 to run good and yes a blown head gasket is a common problem on a early quad

Contact you're local autoparts store (Advance, Autozone,O'rileys) and see if they loan a compression tester and a radatior pressure pressure tester. Check for pressure leakdown (cold) and the radator and make sure that none of your cyclynders have extremly low compaired a blown head gasket will commonly have 1 or 2 low readings and Cherry bomb mufflers (glasspack Resonator type) dont create enough backpressure for the O2 sensor to get a goood reading
