My friend just bought a 98 blazer LS 4X4 and their is a moaning noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear diff. the noise is their when accelerating but gets much worse when coasting to a stop. has anyone ran in to this problem before, and if so what was done to fix it?

Could easily be loose pinion bearings. Unfortunately, the proper repair would involve a nearly complete check of the gear contact and setup.
There is oil in the rear housing, correct?

Here is a site with some good info.
But it sounds like rear end repair time.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

1.) You might be low on diff fluid.
2.) You might have a dry U-joint (Most plausible)
3.) You might have a bad pinion bearing.
I would say u-joint first. Do you ever hear a big clunk when you put it into gear?

I didn't have the right tools to take the diff apart so i took it to the shop. They put a carrier bearing in it and that fixed it. it was about $250. thanks for the help.

That's actually not a bad price if the axle is now quiet (they must've got it shimmed correctly).
