I have found a 2002 SS for sale here that I am thinking about getting. But there are a couple of deciding factors I need to know first. Are the 02 SS with the 3.8 engine realiable? I need a car thats realiable. Also whats about the normal to get out of there cars as far as gas mileage is concerned? What would be a good price to start out at if everything is in good shape with low miles BUT has a salvage title. Thanks

The 3800 Monte's are pretty reliable. There are a few inherant issues to be possibly concerned with. The most serious are transmission shift and pressure control solenoids, which are a major repair. Others not so serious issues are hub bearings, blower fan speed resistors, and turn signal switch problems. The 3800 will get you 19-22 MPG around town, and 30+ on a trip. Be careful of salvage title cars, as they were damaged beyond their value and usually totalled by an insurance company, which could involve flood damage, crash damage, etc... that will cause you many HUGE headaches in the future including but not limited to electrical gremlins, alignment/tire wear issues, etc...
