Steering Wheel Shakes

Hello, let me start off by saying this is a forum I have been looking for a long time I just never took the initiative to look for one! But problems have arised since I bought my 1995 camaro approximately a year ago. When I first got the car it had 112,000 miles on it and it was driving great then all of a sudden I had to get an engine swap because I cracked at head gasket. So I fixed that problem and it was all good now my engine has 70,000 miles on it approximately. I'm not sure of my exact rim size but I think its 18" I have had fuzion tires(Summer Version) on it since I got it... I have had to replace 3 of them now... I replaced one in the back with a different cheaper tire than the fuzions but still the same size I believe it looks a little smaller in comparison though... but anyways back to my steering wheel problem... It seems when I get above 40 my steering wheel shakes horribly and its annoying as can be... then when I get to about 70 it doesnt shake as bad... but sometimes it can and its getting ridicoulous because now my whole car shakes and feels like its going to fall apart practically... My ABS light comes on randomly when it feels like it, when the brakes seem just fine and so does my service engine soon light when the engine is just fine(I had it checked out).... When I had that new tire put on he said some rings i think he called it could be broke and it would be a 180 dollar repair..... so could someone atleast point me in the right direction of getting this problem fixed? Ask any questions if needed I just want a solution :banghead: thanks in advance
(EDIT: and when I hit bumps it sounds like im hitting a big rock sometimes mostly over railroad tracks though.)

Could be a few things here.
A. improperly balanced tires.
B. directional rotation tires, going the wrong way
C. warped rotors
D. loose lugs :yikes:
E. although I've not known it to shake the steering wheel, unbalnced driveshaft.
The rings your mechanic refered to, haging to do with the ABD is probably the reluctor ring? :dunno:

So you cracked a head gasket and has to replace the whole engine?

So you had the car run for codes and none came up?

Have you had your wheels aligned lately? I'm guessing that you have aftermarket rims on, correct? I know when I switched to my C5 rims, I didn't get them all aligned, and the steering wheel would shake and pull, though not as bad as you describe (but I've also got 17's up front, and 18's in the back, so the smaller rims probably helped me). So I went and had them aligned, and now it rides smooth. As for when you hit bumps, that's most likely your rear tires hitting the wheel well. I've got the same problem, its those 18's in the back.

just out of curiosoty, have you checked your break fluid level? I know most cars have a sensor and if the fluid level gets low the light goes on. this would explain the intermittant light and it lighting up when the car shakes a lot.
check your mounts, motor and tranny. I had a busted tranny mount and when I went over RR tracks or a bump the tranny was bouncing a bit and caused a god awful noise.
