I began to fix it today and the paint is just peeling right off, I used Duplicolor Vinyl and fabric paint, Duplicolor filler primer, and Duplicolor Clear coat, these bubbles have only occured on the top vinyl part of the dash, not on the plastic passenger side airbag cover or any other plastic pieces. The possible reasons I could think of are, the paint isn't good/strong enough and I should've just used Krylon like my friend has 2-3 years ago and his is still fine, I didn't let it dry long enough before putting it back in the car, I only waited about an hour tops before putting it back in, combined with the heat from the sun and being inside the car with the windows up and the dash just baking in the sun. AND it also seems like air is coming up from all the deep scratches in the dash from sanding it, you can see that by these pics, is this going to happen again regardless of what paint I use?

DAMN!!!!!! bro that fuckin sucks. I think it has something to do with you not letting it dry long enough and putting it back into the hot car. I waited like a day before the pieces went back into my car and the only problem I had was the paint chiped on the a-pillar where it hits the inside of the door. other than that everything else has been ok. I also used dupli color viynl/cloth paint on mine.

Since the only parts that started to bubble are on the dash then im pretty sure its from the sun baking down on it.

How many coats of paint and clear did you spray?
How many coats of primer did you spray?

It shouldnt happen again, just make sure you let the pieces sit in your garage or where ever for at least a day.

*EDIT* If your going to fix it take the whole dash and sand it down all the way and then start all over again.

I did a bunch of coats of primer, paint, and clear. And like I said, there's not one bubble on the passenger airbag(plastic) so it's defintely because of the vinyl.

...I did use that paint. I think I'm gonna give regular Krylon paint, primer and clear a shot. My friend used, his has been fine for 2-3 years and he's got an award winning Cavy that's been in magazines aswell.

Ohhh didnt know you used that paint for that part......then yup might as well try the Krylon stuff I used it on my xbox lol and its holding up very well.

i think you have to get a special primer/ the ones made for flexible plastic bumpers... they have a "flex agent" in them...

my99cavy
09-21-2006, 04:09 PM
this is the primer I used
http://duplicolor.com/gallery/gallery_images/primer_can3.jpg

also another thing, pretty dumb question but after you sanded were you sure to wipe down the pieces very well?? after I sanded I actually washed them with soapy water and rinsed them with my hose.

Lances133

Also, the primer I used, and yes I wiped down all the pieces the same way, I didn't use soap or alcohol but once again, I've had NO problems with anything else other then the vinyl part of the dash.

F*ck it, I'm not screwing around sanding this shit all over again. I'm just gonna glass it like I wanted to in the first place and sand that down and paint.

Lances133

Definitely more expensive but well worth it, I love glassed interiors, so much better than anything else IMO.

my99cavy

Yikes. I used Duplicolor, just like you...but no primer or clear. I just used a spraygun with water to clean off the dash, then dried it with a cloth, and sprayed the paint on....let it sit for 20 minutes, put it back in the car....that was over a year ago...

Is your dash plastic or vinyl?

Lances133
09-25-2006, 07:58 PM
What should I use for thinner to remove all the paint from just the vinyl part of the dash? Lacquer thinner? I want to do it over but sanding an already painted dash is damn near impossible.

Cavalier2000

MEK works great, stinks like hell

09-25-2006, 09:37 PM
...mek? Is that the actual name?

my99cavy
09-25-2006, 10:57 PM
Just make sure whatever thinner you go with it doesnt start eating through the plastic/vinyl.

Lances133
09-26-2006, 01:14 PM
That's what I'm worried about.

Cavalier2000
09-26-2006, 01:25 PM
It the inatils and i don't rememebr what it stands for but i let some of my stuff set in there for about a week and didn't have a problem but that wasn't the top piece, that was like the rear pieces and some other plastic pieces, works really great for fires as well

my99cavy
09-26-2006, 04:18 PM
What about lacquer thinner??

main thing is to make sure that the stink doesn't stick to the plasticI think more importantly is that you make sure it doesnt eat the plastic.

Well That Sucks For You Why Not Dye The Vinyal

Lances133
09-26-2006, 09:56 PM
I was going for the smoothest look possible, if i dyed it i'd still have the texture in it.

Lances133
09-27-2006, 01:39 PM
Idk, I'm driving around without the top dash as it sits on my bedroom floor with another coat of black just to cover up what i peeled off. Too lazy and un motivated to go put it back on.

my99cavy
09-27-2006, 01:42 PM
throw that bitch back on man at least it will look better than having no dash at all.

Cavalier2000

Lances133

Since I sanded the vinyl...isnt there anything i can use as a sealer and then paint on top of that? What if I used numerous coats of clear, then sanded that a little bit, just enough to have it seal and then primer over that and paint? lol

my99cavy
09-27-2006, 07:42 PM
^Or how about if you just by a used dash and start over or glass it like you said before.

why cant you just resand it to scuff it up and then spray some primer and go from there?

Lances133
