96GsX, intake and exhaust question

I'm asking this for a friend who has just gotten into the tuner car thing. I don't know much about mitsubishi's so i thought this would be a good place to ask. He's got a (for right now) stock 96GSX. His first mods will be a cold air intake and exhaust. turbo back exhaust that is. Possibly a dyno tune also. Since i don't know much about GSX's i was wondering approximately how much power he would gain with just the intake and exhaust mods. And would he benefit from a tune at this point with such simple mods?

Thanks

He won't need to retune it with such simple mods. These setups already run pretty rich from the factory, so letting it breath more should lean it out a little and level things out pretty nicely. As far as hp gains, it would be hard to tell an exact number. Really it depends on how much boost he is running.

Yea but just to give you a reference. There is a vid on here of of more less stock talon running 13.7 with exhaust and free mods. So it can be a mean upgrade!

For one, you dont put a CAI on a turbo car, the air will just get heated up after the turbo anyway. If you mean a hard intake pipe, I would tell him to put his money elsewhere. $100 for a hard intake pipe is rediculous especially when it really doesnt do that much for you. For his first mods, I would suggest and exhaust, K&N filter, a boost guage, and a boost controller. After that it depends on his goals. Since he has no tuning device, tuning isn't possible. If you ask him about his goals, we can help you on a upgrade path or you can just go to www.dsmtuners.com (http://www.dsmtuners.com) and look at the upgrade path there.

a lot of stuff you can make yourself. there are guides everywhere out there about how to make your own hard intake piping, your own boost controller, custom exhaust(minus the muffler), hacked airbox, and whatever else(these are known as freemods). one thing you can maybe do after considering those things is to get the car set up for higher gains down the road, and this is also general maintenance, such as K&N air filter, better spark plugs and wires, better fuel filter, make sure all the belts are in good condition, higher quality oil(royal purple, amsoil, mobil1), coolant flush, and brakes. these are all somewhat cheap things. then get into a little bit higher mods, such as bigger injectors, fmic, exhaust and intake manifolds, cams, bigger turbo, bigger fuel pump and regulator, etc. after these last couple mods you have to get it tuned. use vfaq.com to set you up with a good plan of action.

it all seems like a lot, but remember, you have the internet which is the awesome tool when it comes to finding good prices and deals.
